This day is of tremendous significance. It symbolizes the end of colonial rule in Africa, and it ushers in a new era. It was an era full of hope. The aspiration of the people of Africa was about to be realized.

Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah was born in Accra, Ghana in 1958, one year after his country's independence — a child of history in the most literal sense. The eldest son of Ghana's founding president Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife Fathia, Gamal came into the world at the precise moment Pan-Africanism was its most hopeful and alive. Named after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, in tribute to the deep bond between two of the continent's most consequential leaders, he embodied from birth the cross-continental vision that defined his father's presidency. His early childhood unfolded in the presidential residence in Accra, until February 1966, when a military coup deposed his father during a state visit to China. At eight years old, Gamal was evacuated to Cairo by his mother, with assistance from President Nasser. He would later describe the experience as frightening and vivid in his memory decades later. The family settled in Maadi, Cairo, where Gamal and his siblings attended Al-Nasr College. After his father died in exile in 1972, Gamal pursued advanced studies in political science at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, earning his doctorate — a foundation that would shape his entire intellectual life. He built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades at Al-Ahram Weekly, the English-language edition of Egypt's most prestigious newspaper. Beginning as a political journalist and rising to editor of the International Affairs section, he became a prominent and principled voice on Pan-Africanism, colonialism, migration rights, and Africa's place in the world. His writing was never detached — it was animated by conviction and guided by the same ideals of justice and human dignity that had defined his father's legacy. Described by those who knew him as a man of profound intellectual curiosity, independent thought, and quiet conviction, Gamal lived as a bridge between two of Africa's most historically significant nations. He participated in Ghana's 50th independence anniversary celebrations in 2007, reflecting with characteristic depth on what his father's vision had meant and what it still demanded. He kept his personal life away from the public eye, but his reputation as a principled intellectual and committed Pan-Africanist was unambiguous to all who read his work or sought his counsel. Gamal Nkrumah passed away peacefully on 14 October 2026 in Cairo, at the age of 68, following a stroke and prolonged illness. He was buried on 17 October 2026 in accordance with Islamic traditions. He is survived by his siblings Samia and Sekou Nkrumah, and his two children. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his values leave an enduring legacy.
