Recuerdos

Frances Helen Shapcott was born on May 4th 1945, in Okehampton, Devon, to Frederick and Mollie Sweett. Frances, her parents and brother David moved to Plymouth shortly after the Second World War ended. Frances attended Ernesettle Primary School, followed by Public School School for Girls. She was a notable athlete at school, playing Hockey and representing Devon at the sprint events in Athletics. She left school at 16 working at a printers and a solicitors in the Plymouth area. Frances met future husband Roger Shapcott in 1963 through their mutual connection to Plymouth Albion rugby club. They were married in September 1964 at St Pancras Church, Beacon Park, Plymouth. They had two children, daughter Wendy Shapcott followed 5 years later by son Lee Shapcott. Frances's entrepreneurial spirit and extensive catering experience led her to run many successful businesses in Plymouth, as well as Exeter and Southampton. Frances loved to travel, her favorite places included China, India and the United States, where both Frances and Roger travelled extensively. Frances and Roger retired to southwest France, enjoying a rebuilding project among the sunflowers and vineyards of the region. Frances lived for her family and was very proud to be the grandmother of five grandchildren - Benjamin, Joshua, India, Emily and Gabriella, and most recently a great grandchild, Alfred.

From Caroline Sweett If anybody was to ask me how well did i know Aunty Fran i would have to say…."not well enough". If anybody was to ask me how often did i see aunty Fran i would have to say…."not often enough". From the first time we met she welcomed me into the family with huge warmth and affection…whilst desperately trying to educate/warn me about the Sweett men! Aunty Fran had an amazing ability to ‘get' people…to understand their personalities and connect with everyone. This enabled her to have such close relationships with all of her family and friends regardless of their age. Everyone who knew Aunty Fran will have seen that twinkle and sparkle in her eye when ever she had a cheeky joke with you. I once made an apple cake for Fran and Roger whilst they were living in Ramsbury. A short while after Aunty Fran thanked me and said…. "thank you for the delicious cake sweetheart but i am going to say this because it's you….that cake was raw in the middle!!" I was horrified but we both had a good laugh about it. Some of my fondest memories are of the time Martyn and I spent with Fran and Roger in France. They could not have been more welcoming or generous….we had such a lovely time we came back a few days later for an extra night! I will finish by saying that whenever Aunty Fran was around I knew I would always have a lovely time. I will always think of her and miss her. Caroline Sweett

Nan, Still trying to find the right words to articulate how much I already miss you. I'm trying to hold on to every memory we have and in particular I've been playing on loop in my head the moment when we sang "love of my life" by Queen when you came to visit me in Spain. I love you so much Ems x
