Dr. Bau Dinh To, beloved husband, loving father, good son, and inspiring brother lost a hard-fought battle with cancer on June 15, 2020. He will be missed. Born in Thailand, Bau grew up in the nomadic life of a diplomatic family anchored in boarding schools in Dalat, Beirut, and eventually settling down to university in Germany. Exceptionally gifted in science and literature, speaking seven languages fluently, his humanity and compassion led him to the renowned school of Medicine at Heidelberg University. The school of Medicine had to make an exception for the young 17-year-old, for they had never admitted so young a medical student. Juggling his demanding curriculum and his love of family, Bau would make time to visit his parents wherever they were in the world. It was on one of these trips to Lagos, Nigeria where he met a beautiful young woman traveling from university in London to visit her own uncle. Bau and Linda were immediately stricken with one another and carried out an international romance before marrying and settling down in Stuttgart where Bau worked as a surgeon. From his humanity, he always maintained his belief in treating the person and not the ailment. His reputation as one of the best surgeons grew quickly and he was well-loved by staff and patients alike. Bau and Linda welcomed their first son Kenny and were content maintaining their fulfilling lives in Germany while traveling extensively all over the world, and in particular often visiting Hong Kong where Linda had her large family and Los Angeles where Bau had his. With the arrival of Ian, their second son, the pull of family took them to Hong Kong. Bau quickly settled into leading the emergency team at Ruttonjee Hospital in Hong Kong. Again, with his skills and deep humanity, Bau quickly won the affections of the staff and patients. Given his and the family's German citizenship and his good reputation, Bau also served as the physician to the German consulate. In the small community of Hong Kong, he and Linda became known and well-loved for their philanthropic activities through the Rotary Club of Hong Kong. Bau was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His sense of humor withstood all of life's challenges and brightened every life he touched. The world will be a little dimmer without him. He is survived by his father Van Tong To, his wife Linda To Hwang, his two sons Kenny and Ian To, his brother Tony To, his sister-in-law Gina To, and his sisters Betty Costa and Mimi To Schnerb. In lieu of flowers, please send your donation to Doctors Without Borders, an international humanitarian organization that provides medical care to conflict zones and countries affected by endemic diseases. Thank you. Our memories of you will keep a smile on our faces and warmth in our hearts. We will miss you, Bau. "Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die." - Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep, by Mary Elizabeth Frye

Dear Uncle Bau, I remember I was always scared of you when I was younger but you were always so kind to me whenever I came over to spend time with Ian. You'll always be remembered as my cheeky uncle who‘d joke around with me. Now that I am older and having read so many heartwarming stories written by your colleagues and patients, I wish I could have had the opportunity to learn from you as a doctor as well. I hope my patients will speak about me as fondly as yours speak about you. Love, Chacha

Dear uncle To, You are the only person I trust in this world. You are such a kind, intelligent man with such a personal integrity that you treat everyone from all walks of life equally. You are not only a nice uncle, you took care of us. Your love and care of Becky helped her to recover from her injury, not to mention you personally carefully treated my hand injury, and indeed, our entire family had been under your blissful watch, my parents, my sisters included, over the years. Such a luxurious fortune we had. You were such a mentor to me as well. When I was down and in need of the comfort of a trust worthy guidance, you were always there. I recall once you encouraged me at the hospital back stair case to stand firm, be strong and bravely face the world. I took the advice and I survived. I also recall we sat and talked outside of the operation room once, you were concerned whether I was being bullied and you encouraged me to up hold my principle and stay firm. Your words, bears such wisdom, love, selflessness and righteousness, they always point me to a clear path and gave me all the confidence and hope to move forward, press on to face this world. I know there are wishes that you want to fulfill and I did have the privilege to assist in completing all but one. For this, I assure you, its water under the bridge now. There is nothing to be over worried about as it has been forgiven if not also forgotten. Lastly, while I will take good care of Becky, please continue to help watch over her from far above with your love and blessing. This is my last wish of you in addition to please rest in peace. I don‘t want to say goodbye to you, cause i know you still here e with your family, becky and me. Your beloved, Ivy

Dear Bau, Thank you very much for everything you ever did for my family. You were there for my mother when she was sick and you were there for my father when he was sick. You were the most loyal friend to us all and I am forever grateful. You and Linda even hosted Jules and I for our wedding at the Country Club! Almost every memory I have of my life growing up in Hong Kong is linked to memories of you and Linda. Thank you. In a funny way, my finger has started hurting over the past few weeks. I've been wanting to consult my most favourite hand specialist, Dr. Toe - (I am sure you never heard that one before) - maybe you're just playing with my from above. I guess now you have time to relax, enjoy a few wines, some good food and have long discussions with Tony whilst Mariko politely 'listens' to what you both are ranting on about. I hope you also get the chance to meet Jules and my first daughter, Matilda. She will learn so much of the world from you as I did. Jules and I are sad you didn't get to meet Hugo - but we will be sure to tell him all about you. You inspired me and you will always inspire me. I feel like I need to stop being lazy and learn a few more languages to catch up with you! Or at least read a few more books! Make the most of life, right? Anyway, I am sorry that this message cannot in anyway do your memory any justice. There are too many fun times to think about and reminisce about....I will have to honour your memory by being the best I can be. I will keep in touch with Linda, Kenny and Ian. There are plenty more meals to be had with them and we will be toasting to you guys up there! We will miss you Bau. Lots of love, Kenzo, Jules, Matilda, Hugo and the Pannell Family
