William “Bill” Ahern Jr., aged 70, passed away on December 2, 2023, at his home in Novato, California. Born on October 29, 1953, in San Francisco to Joan DeBono Ahern and William Ahern Sr., Bill was a man of service and dedication.
Bill was a lifelong learner who valued education. He attended Serra High School and went on to earn a BA in Business Management from St. Mary's College of California. He furthered his education by receiving a PhD in Psychology from Fielding Graduate University. Following his PhD, he became a Therapist at First Responder Support Network, pursuing his passion for supporting veterans and first responders.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and later with the Naval Special Warfare Unit One in the 1990s and early 2000s. His commitment to public service continued in his law enforcement career, contributing to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the California Department of Justice, and the San Francisco Police Department.
Bill was the devoted father of Gavin Ahern, who is married to Trish Gomez Ahern; Jordan Ahern Deming, married to Jarren Deming; and Sara Ahern. He was married three times, finding love and companionship with his surviving wife, Erika Vadapolas-Ahern, and previously with Melaine Carlascio-Budd, Gavin’s mother, and Kathi Bagot, Jordan and Sara’s mother. As a proud grandfather, he cherished his time with Lucas and Isla, Jordan's children; and Jonathan, Sara's son. He is also survived by his siblings, James “Jimmy” Ahern, married to Linda; John “Johnny” Ahern, widower of Margaret; and Patrick “Pat” Ahern, married to Laretta; and his nieces and nephews Michael Bernard Ahern, married to Lauren; Kevin Ahern; Michael Bryan Ahern, married to Melissa; Drew Ahern; Ryan Ahern; and Vanessa Ahern.
Bill's passion for sports was evident throughout his life. After returning from Vietnam, he took up rugby, a sport he later revisited with his son and nephews when they were college-aged, playing together for the Baracaus Rugby Club. While working for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, he played football in a police officers' league. "His love for football extended beyond playing; he coached high school football at several Bay Area schools, including Riordan, Terra Nova, and his alma mater, Serra High School.
As a Bay Area native, he was a devoted San Francisco 49ers fan, embodying the spirit of a true 49er faithful. Bill also loved traveling and exploring the outdoors. He took pride in his Irish heritage and revered his time visiting Ireland, Scotland, and other European countries. His love for the coast was evident in his enjoyment of surfing, backpacking, hiking, and taking long treks with his beloved wife, Erika and his dog, Daly. Known for his sense of humor, dedication, huge heart, and warrior spirit, Bill left a lasting impact on his colleagues and community.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Memorial services are scheduled for Monday, December 11, 2023. Floral tributes can be sent to the church, and donations to the First Responders Support Network are welcomed as ways to honor Bill’s memory and continue his legacy of support. I sure miss you, my brother. We had some great times. Godspeed my Brother in BLUE.
Lt. Marc Dowdy Smso Ret.

Never a more formidable warrior can be had, at your side as you fight the evil that men do. Bill it was my life’s honor, to know and work with you, fighting crime, kicking doors, never knowing what danger awaits us. Your strength of character, both physical and personal, was indeed an asset to our Special Investigations Unit. We will never forget your friendship, courage and the ever present sense of humor that help us tolerate the stress of danger the job exposed us to. And now we must leave you to join the SIU team members that have gone before you. In sure you will give them a good laugh. “Vaya con Dios Amigo” Amén.
