A life lived in the light of the stage, and in the hearts of those who watched her shine.

Angela Morant was an English actress of quiet distinction, a woman whose talent for conveying composed strength and inner complexity earned her a cherished place in British television and film across more than four decades. Born on 15 January 1941, in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, she arrived into a world already shaped by performance — her father, Philip Morant, was a Shakespearean actor and radio performer, and on her mother's side she counted Bill Travers, Linden Travers, and Penelope Wilton among her family. Her brother, Richard Morant, would become an accomplished actor in his own right. Acting was not a choice Angela stumbled into; it was her inheritance. She attended Chipping Campden Grammar School in Gloucestershire before making her stage debut in 1962 with the Mermaid Theatre Company in London, playing Mistress Fond in a production of Eastward Ho! Television came calling through the late 1960s, with guest appearances in Dixon of Dock Green (1966) and Callan (1969), but it was her work through the 1970s that brought her wider recognition. Her portrayal of Octavia Minor in the BBC's landmark 1976 adaptation of I, Claudius — arguably one of the finest drama productions British television has ever produced — showcased her ability to hold the screen through restraint and precision. Three years later, she delivered one of her most demanding performances, taking the lead in John Krish's psychological drama Victims (1979), playing a suburban housewife unravelling under quiet terror. The 1980s and 1990s brought continued variety. She appeared alongside Anthony Andrews and Ava Gardner in the NBC miniseries A.D. (1985) as Priscilla, and brought her steady professionalism to beloved series including Inspector Morse, Bergerac, and The Bill. From 1991 to 1993 she played the recurring role of Barbara Harrison in Brookside. Films including Ken Loach's Riff-Raff (1991), Swept from the Sea (1997), and Richard Eyre's Iris (2001) rounded out a screen career of remarkable breadth. In 1987, she and her brother Richard shared the screen together in the Lord Peter Wimsey adaptation Have His Carcase — a rare and personal pleasure. Angela was the first wife of actor Ben Kingsley, and together they had two children, Thomas and Jasmin. She passed away on 3 June 2026, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy woven into the fabric of British dramatic arts.
