I played like my hair was on fire.

Alphonso Smith Jr. was born on October 20, 1985, in Pahokee, Florida, to Alphonso Smith Sr. and Sharon Smith. From an early age, he possessed an uncommon combination of athletic fire and personal depth — qualities that would define him throughout his life. Known affectionately to family and friends as "Zo" and "Prime," he grew up idolizing Denzel Washington, Michael Jordan, Deion Sanders, and Johnny Cochran, dreaming not only of sports greatness but of one day practicing law. At Pahokee High School, Smith announced himself as one of the most gifted players in Florida. As a senior in 2004, he led the Blue Devils to a 13-1 record and the Florida Class 2B state championship, earning MVP honors in the title game. Playing both quarterback and cornerback, he threw for 2,400 yards and 32 touchdowns while recording four interceptions on defense — a two-sport marvel who earned first-team all-state recognition. Smith enrolled at Wake Forest University in 2004, majoring in history and becoming one of the most decorated defensive backs in program history. Between 2005 and 2008, he recorded 188 tackles and set the ACC record with 21 career interceptions — a record that still stands. His 2007 season was historic: he led the nation with eight picks, including a 100-yard interception return against Maryland, the longest in Wake Forest history. As a senior, he was a consensus First-Team All-American and a Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalist. In 2022, he was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame. "What Wake Forest did for me," he once said, "was a lot greater than what I did for them." Selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Smith played four seasons in the league, later enjoying his most productive year with the Detroit Lions in 2010, where he led the team with five interceptions and earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. After retiring, he returned to his roots — serving as a sideline reporter for Wake Forest radio before fulfilling a dream he had held since the age of sixteen: joining the coaching staff at Pahokee High School, where he worked from 2015 until his death. Alphonso Smith Jr. passed away on September 2, 2026, at the age of 40. He is survived by his wife and two children. He was a son of Pahokee who gave the game everything he had, and who carried burdens few knew. He is deeply missed.

I was so hyped for him when he was picked. Knew nothing about him but remember in his first press conference he said he played like his hair was on fire. No idea why I remember that so vividly but I had such high hopes for him. Seemed like a high energy guy. I'm praying we get a better handle on mental health in this country.
