James Peter Hynds, age 57, of Dallas Texas, passed away Easter morning April 17, 2022, unexpectedly from natural causes. James was born on May 15, 1964, to Thomas Hynds Jr. and Katherine (Brogan) Hynds in Evanston, IL, the youngest of five brothers. He was known as Jamie in childhood and Jim in adulthood. After Jim graduated from Fremd High School in Palatine, IL in 1982, he attended Illinois State University. In the early 1990's Jim moved with his mother to Grapevine, Texas to care for his ailing brother Tom. Jim was a social, bright, and creative person with interests in music and film. Jim also had a strong interest in bible studies and theology. He was a dedicated member of the Embrace United Church of Christ in Richland Hills. Jim had a big heart and loved spending time with people. He took care of his mother during her final years, visiting her daily while she was living at a local nursing home. Jim often spent hours with the other elderly residents listening to their stories of lives well lived. Jim had a keen ability for witty and side-splitting wordplay that always made dinner time banter lighthearted and joyful. He will be remembered for his bright smile, curiosity, incredible memory, and open heartedness. Jim will be dearly missed. Jim is survived by his brothers John Hynds & wife Kathy; David Hynds & wife Kathleen Ballew; Paul Hynds & wife Laura, nieces and nephews Heather Truffer & husband Tom; Jennifer Hynds & husband Brigg Barsness; Cecil Hynds-Riddle and partner David Butler; Daisy Valle & husband Ivan; Dylan Hynds; Polly Hynds-Riddle & partner Lauren Braman; Sarah Hynds; and Julie Hynds, and great-nieces Elise Barsness and Ella Valle and great-nefew Calvin Truffer. He was preceded in death by eldest brother, Thomas Joseph Hynds III, mother Katherine Hynds, and Father Thomas Hynds Jr. A graveside memorial will be held on June 4, 2022, 10:30am at Grapevine Cemetery, followed by a private luncheon. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim Hynds may be directed to Equality Texas.

Jim will remain in my heart; he was uniquely wonderful and special. I have many memories of treasured evening chats by phone or text as well as over coffee/soda. Times together at church and groups like Beer and Theology. He knew more than most anyone I know about a wide variety of subjects - science, geography, music, history, philosophy, art, literature, politics, culture, human rights, and oh so much more. Topics from Nihilism to Escher to Scandinavian religions, Alice Cooper, Bing Crosby and David Bowie, to world wars and governments. Dreams, hopes, and fears, and suffering. Jim was one of the most honest, genuine individuals I have ever known and I treasure the friendship we shared. Jim always amazed me with his ability to recall, question, and share. Often, I would google a subject after we talked to catch up. He helped drag me into the world of you-tube with the links he sent. He loved to learn - was constantly teaching himself new apps, programs, and skills. Jim and I discussed God's unconditional love for everyone and God in our lives. We shared the searched for faith, hope and peace. I deeply admired his devotion and care for his mother, as he cared for and visited her daily until her death. He listened for many hours to so many people that were lonely and needed his companionship, dry wit, and humor, even if those people told him the same story over and over. Jim was kind, thoughtful and generous. Once, he bid on an evening of babysitting at our church auction - and won! He immediately took the certificate over to parents with new twin girls. He loved humor, especially that requiring some thought. But, the humor was never cruel or mean. Jim, I love you and miss our friendship. I continue to save your texts on my phone and still feel your bright light. Until we meet again, love and hugs. Mariel

Jim was perhaps the most resourceful male counselor at Phantom Lake YMCA Camp. I fondly remember him bringing Sherlock Holmes to life, and I enjoyed at least one in-between session of quality time with him. He'll be sorely missed.
