Bill Stories: We were eating breakfast in Crescent City after the annual Wild River Run. The restaurant was crowded with runners. At one point I got up and went to the bathroom. On my way back someone at a table stopped me, pointed to Bill, and asked if that was Bill McChesney. "Yes", I replied. "Do you think he'd talk to me?" "Sure he would. Where are you from, by the way?" "Geyserville" I leaned an important fact right then. Bill's fame and respect as a runner reached far beyond Eugene. Bill talked the guy into submission, by the way. ----- We had hiked to a small lake high up in the Wallowa Mts to fish for one day. The trip in and out required walking a switchback trail on a particularly steep and gravely ridge - steep enough and bare enough that you could the the entire trail from bottom to top zigzag across side of the ridge. Bill, as was typical, was carrying too much weight too unevenly packed to support stability. On one particularly tricky downhill part, he slipped lost his balance and plunged to the next switchback below - a drop of probably eight feet. Bill landed on his feet and as we rushed down to see if he was alright, grinned and said "I found a shortcut". My lesson that day is that Bill was either amazingly lucky or he was built like a cat.

Bill thank you for being my starter! It was always calming to get to the line and see you there with a positive word and the starters gun in your hand. You are a legend and i am one of the lucky ones who was able to know you THANK YOU!
