Stephen Gavula

July 13th, 2005

July 13th, 2005

Steve Gavula, 56, of Ranchos de Taos passed away on July 13, 2005. He was a great musician, guitar player and singer. He played at the Sagebrush Inn for years with The Sagebrush Trio. He also sat in with Bill, Bonnie and Michael Hearne, Johnny Gimble, Pat Burns and many other Taos musicians. He had a incredible sense of humor and was a great teller of stories. He had gone back to college about 2 ½ years ago to get his degree in elementary education. He knew the names of every peak in the Taos and Santa Fe area, and in spite of the fact that he was a polio survivor; he had climbed many of those peaks. He left behind many people who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Dawn Gavula who he married in 1995, his parents, Shirley and John Gavula, brothers, John, Jim, Joe, George and Pat, sisters, Mary, Carole and Anna, all their spouses, many nieces, nephews and many other relatives. In lieu of any services, a celebration of Steve's life will be announced at a later date.

Somehow it never occurred to me that this incredible man would not be here forever or that those guitar pickin' sounds (harmonies, too) would not be something I could hear again. My memories are these: Bah Humbug (a shared Christmas sentiment)--delivering a couch to him @ the Sagebrush (requiring several co-conspirators). Poker games with Sandra & Seaver, Blueberry pies (my secret plot to seduce him that never worked) and the only walk we did together up El Salto where he outdid me, of course, by a mile--without making me look bad. He was such a special man and a constant intermittent influence on my existence.

Hi, I played in a trio )Tres Cajones) with Steve in '88/'89. Played at the Sagebrush, on the ski hill, and in Sante Fe. I'm deeply saddened to learn of his passing. He was a musician of the highest calibre and a fine fine man with a highly evolved sense of humor. Here's a quote about Steve that has been up on my website (as part of my bio)for sometime now: " Tres Cajones with Steve Gavula preachin' the gospel of C.F. Martin until they had to two step just to save their souls". I miss him, and I send my (belated) condolences along to you and to everyone who was close to him. In memory, Jesse McRae

I knew Steve as a younger man in Taos in the 1970's. He was a good friend from the old days, and I'm very sad to see of his passing. Thank you, Steve, for many wonderful moments.
