Uma Madhav
Shakuntala's Daughter
Shakuntala Aka Shaku Madhav
February 26th - May 31st, 2023
February 26th - May 31st, 2023
Lived respected, loved and died regretted.
Shakuntala Madhav, affectionately known as Shaku, was a remarkable woman who lived a life full of accomplishments and laughter. She was born on February 26th (in the 50's), in Molo, Uganda. She arrived in Uk as part of the exodus from Uganda. Finally she later moved to Edgware and Bushey, England. Her formative years in Uganda left a lasting impression on her.
Shaku's journey started in the academic world when she earned her BSc in Home Science from the prestigious MS University in Baroda in 1972. That same year, she embarked on an impressive career as a civil servant, dedicating more than four decades of her life to the Department of Work and Pensions. Shaku's dedication to her work was widely admired and respected by her colleagues and friends. Many of her work colleagues still remember the shy girl who started there and blossomed into the life and soul of of the 3 Neasden, Hendon and Watford offices. They have many stories to tell..some which may surprise you.
In 1985, Shakuntala took on the 'role' of wife to Saty Madhav. Now this is the stuff that could be used the making of a Bollywood movie (watch this space). By 1987, she expanded her loving family by becoming a mother to lovely girls Uma & Vanisha. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and she worked tirelessly to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for her loved ones. Her girls were her best friends and their bond unbreakable. There would not be a single day without a 3 way conversation; they were the centre of her universe.
In 2022 came the biggest moment of them all; the birth of her beloved grandchildren Reyan and Ari. She was by their side and her daughters' for the first few difficult months of motherhood. She enjoyed every minute and felt an ache for her grandson's for every minute she wasn't with them. Everytime Reyan and Ari see their Baa, they lean in for a kiss, as their connection was so strong.
Throughout her life, Shakuntala had a unique ability to bring joy and infectious enthusiasm to those around her. Her positive attitude and zest for life made her a beloved figure in both her personal and professional circles. She had an amazing sense of humour and had a unique way of thinking which left everyone in awe and stiches.
Shaku is the most generous and genuinely selfless we have known, as she hardly spent any money on herself but would give, give and give, never expecting anything in return, which was very annoying to the recipients. Her friends from university and family will vouch for that.
Many would pour forth their burden and sorrows and she would lend her shoulders for support, her two ears and then very sage advice, which many found comforting. She was the perfect agony aunt.
Shaku Madhav's passing on May 31st, 2023, after 6 months battling against cancer, left a profound void in the lives of those who knew her, but her memory will live on in the hearts of her friends, family, and colleagues.
As we celebrate the life of this remarkable woman, we are reminded of her resilience, dedication to her work, generosity and the love she held for her family and friends. Shaku will always be remembered and cherished for her immense contributions to the world.

Shaku and I initially were "just" colleagues but I can't recall when that relationship turned into a very good friendship.....and I'm so thankful for this friendship Everyone who knew Shaku would agree she loved chatting and she had many interesting things to say. One perticular Shaku's say comes to my mind is that, she'll start a conversation with "I've something funny to say" or "this will make you laugh".... and the stories she'll tell will guarantee make one laugh...... Well, I'm proud to say I was one lucky person with whom she shared so many interesting topics. So Shaku thank you for all of the laughs, advice, and sweet memories you have left behind.

Dear shaku, It was in 1989 that we first met you and innumerable times since then, mostly as long term guests (pests??)at your various houses in London (I think we have come to every single one of them),the last time being in jan 2022.What was the common factor in each one of those visits was your welcoming smile and the way you made us feel at home from the first minute till we said goodbye.Your sense of humour was uncanny, even though the butt of your jokes was my dear cousin Madhu:)Your hospitality was superb to say the least and I remember the stack of rotis I have demolished many a time.I have lost count, the number of times you have picked us up from railway stations.you were always there for us when we were feeling low for any reason. Will always remember you for your bright smile and the positivity you brought for people around you.

Shaku Aunty/Foi I look back on all the messages we sent to each other and you were always there for me when needed, always gave me advice and made sure I was ok wherever I was. I will always remember on all the good memories we had. I will always be grateful to you for allowing me to spend my childhood with you and taking me along on all the little family trips. I will miss you telling everyone all the funny stories about me, especially the he-man one. I'm happy that I was able to share one last bit of happiness with you :) I spoke to baa the day before you went and told her she needed you and I hope you are now resting in peace. I miss you lots and will never forget everything you did for me. Shailen

Dear Shaku, You have found your peace after all the pain and anxieties that you braved, these past few months . You have a quiet strength. Your patient listening, and encouraging words have given me so much succourespecially when Mala was doing her course. You always had a positive outlook and assured me of good tidings. Your words have come true. God bless you for your unfailing support , and help to Mala. We loved visiting you and your close knit family- always welcoming us with a warm smile. You made the best pooris and bajjis the last time we were there- but you would subsist on bowls of tea and papads or crackers! The visit which we fondly remember is , when Uma was a toddler and would talk endlessly in her baby language . We had so much fun. We will miss you, your gentle smile and kind words . Love, Rathna.
