Recuerdos

"The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms." Deut 33 v 27

As you already know,  Pam left us and went to rest in the everlasting arms of Jesus on June 22nd. We know she's delighted to be in her true home in heaven, but it's a little trickier for those of us who loved her being here. We'd love you to share your part of the story of this remarkable wife, mother, friend to many and “Auntie Pam” to thousands, by adding your own reflections (via the "Leave a tribute" button).  Thank you so much.

A year since Grandma left us. A never ending beacon of joy are the words that came to mind when I think of her. I can't think of one memory where she wasn't smiling or making others smile. Whether at family gatherings, catching her at the end of toddler club or even visiting her in her last few months in hospital. Her kindness seemed to be so effortless and natural and it's one of the many things about her that continues to inspire me. There's so many things I wish I could have said to her but most of all I'm so grateful to have had her as a constant force of good in my life. Thank you for loving me and everyone around you so deeply, thank you for the lessons I didn't realise you taught me until now and most of all, thank you for being you ♥️

We first met Pam when we moved to Cranleigh in 1976. We were looking for a church to accommodate ourselves and our two small children of 4 and 2. Not being Baptists, CBC was not the first church we visited but as we entered CBC, on our second Sunday in Surrey, Pam gave us and our children such a welcome and told us about the creche and, very importantly with a 2 year old, the loos, and was just so friendly and welcoming and we knew we had come home. Later, in 1978, I joined Toddler Group with our third child. I was, and still am, quite shy, and Pam knew just how to make me feel comfortable and at home. Consequently I sat with Pam on the welcome desk for several years Pam introduced me to Cranleigh Choral Society where I sat with her and Judy Galpin as fellow altos. One year when we were looking for somewhere to go on holiday Pam introduced us to friends from Guernsey with whom we did a house swap and that turned out to be one of the best holidays we had while our children were small. Eventually we moved away and lost touch to some extent, but on the odd visit to Cranleigh if I bumped into Pam she would welcome me like an old friend - the kind of friend you can just pick up where you left off. She was always interested in our family and what they were doing. We have so many happy memories of Pam and will always be grateful for her kindness, her wisdom and her encouragement. It was an honour to have been one of the many friends of this lovely lady.

My first memory of Pam - possibly the first time we met - was just before the 18th birthday of her granddaughter Charis, to whom I am now married. Full of nerves ahead of meeting a lot of family and friends for the first time, I sat in the rocking chair by the front door, restlessly waiting for Charis to finish getting ready. As 30 minutes after the time I was expecting us to leave came and went, Pam calmly walked past to check in on how Charis was getting on. Half way up the stairs, she turned to me, and graciously stated: "you better start getting used to this, dear." How wise these words turned out to be! Over the years, I came to recognise Pam's pertinent wisdom as one of her many gifts. Never the loudest presence at a Cheesman family gathering, Pam's words were often few, but she had the ability of always asking just the right question, or giving a needed thoughtful and considered response. The kindness and calmness with which she lived made her words all the more appealing; they were spoken from a contented and consistent heart. Pam's welcome for me into the Cheesman clan, her persistent prayer, and the clearly displayed joy with which she lived will be deeply missed. What great assurance it is to know that she carries these attributes on into an eternity in the presence of the God who she so faithfully and humbly served in this life.

It’s so very hard to know where to start, I’ve read many other worthy tributes to our lovely Auntie Pam, and read the perfect tribute to Pam of all her incredible qualities, each one absolutely beautiful and true. As others have said, I could always rely on that beautiful smile and happy welcome whenever I saw Pam. She always managed to make me feel as though I was special and cared for in the deepest sense and as though I was the only one in the room. I’m sure she made us all feel that way. I first met Pam at the toddler group many, many years ago she made me so wonderfully welcome. Her warmth and kindness were exemplary. We kept in touch and our friendship continued through the years even though we didn’t see each other much, I always held a special place for her in my heart and soul, as she’s one of the loveliest people I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet and know and call a friend. Her dear husband Brian and their family and her parents and family were so blessed to have her in their lives. She certainly has lead a wonderful other person centred life and touched many hearts. That’s some comfort for her family I hope, knowing she was such a beautiful lady. She certainly did love pretty things and I got pleasure for dropping in pink flowers/roses for Pam if I was in Cranleigh. Her unwavering love and support has meant the world to me through the years and I can never thank her enough. It’s surreal to think she’s not here and hard to come to terms with, but I’m so grateful she was in my life. I’m sure she’s happy where she is 💗 Miss you dear Pam and always will. God Bless. Love Sammy, Miles and Gloria xxx

Pam was a very special friend over many years and I considered her a “spiritual mother”. She always kept in touch, especially with her beautiful hand-made birthday cards. She was a tremendous encouragement, always so positive and willing to see the best in others. She and Brian have always been so hospitable and it was rare that I visited Cranleigh without dropping in to see them. She was a truly generous person, not just in her hospitality but in her acceptance of others from different backgrounds and Christian traditions, which I greatly appreciated. It was an honour and privilege to know her.
