Matthew Ph.D.

Please click on the heart to let us know you were here and to receive email updates regarding the upcoming Virtual Memorial Service on June 6, 2021. We lost our beloved Matthew on Sunday, May 17, 2020. He died in Porter Regional Hospital in Chesterton, Indiana. He was 86 years old. Matthew was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 27, 1933, the first child of Edith Boys Enos and Bertram Enos, followed by Jo (the late JoAnn Enos (Wilkerson) Stone, Tim (the late Timothy Enos) and Catya (Catherine Enos Mandt). Matt's parents were gifted teachers: Bertram, English and literature, Edith, dance and physical education. Matt grew up with an appreciation of music, art and wide range of literature, not just from books but newspapers as well. There was the Plymouth Pilot News, published by his grandparents and the Mishawaka Enterprise, published by his mother, to whom Matt remained a loyal and loving son. From an early age, Matt took pride in learning how newspapers were made and seeing how people valued the papers he delivered to them. Living in the small town of Plymouth, Matt was able to freely roam the outdoors. He grew up with a deep respect for nature, eventually becoming an avid birdwatcher. He became a supporter of environmental causes and and movements with goals of peace, equality and justice. Matt had become a thoughtful student with serious academic ambitions. He was accepted by the University of Chicago with a scholarship and earned a B.A. degree in 1952. He was working on his M.A. degree when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1955. When he was honorably discharged in 1960, he returned to the University and completed the requirements for an M.A. in History. In later years, he returned to complete doctoral studies and dissertation research, earning a Ph.D. in Education. In June 1966, Matthew married Marci Morrow Augustine, a teacher and University of Chicago alumna with two young girls. He was a challenging, exciting and devoted husband and a dependable stepdad. He was generous with his time and skills-- skills that included badminton, archery and tossing a mean Frisbee. In spite of such rigors as teaching his wife to drive a stick shift, they would have happily celebrated 54 years of marriage in 2020. Teaching was Matt's passion. After several years of teaching high school, Matt became a dedicated member of the Social Science faculty of the fledgling Loop College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago located in the heart of downtown. He was an early member of the "Insane MacIntosh Disciples'" a faculty group which met to discuss and teach the functions of the first model of the Apple computers. In addition to being an esteemed teacher, Matt served as department chair and, for a period, as vice president of the College. Matt retired from Harold Washington in 1998 after 25 years Matt was an excellent writer. During his teaching years and after, he authored several study guides to accompany a series of college textbooks on psychology. He helped graduate students with their dissertations. He assisted renowned Professor Benjamin D. Wright in graduate research classes at the University. He stayed in touch with other Social Science retirees. He read many, many books. Matt said he was as busy after retirement as he was before. In December 2018, the couple moved to an assisted living community in Chesterton, Indiana. This was Matthew's final residence. Those left behind to miss him deeply include wife Marci, stepdaughters Eden Augustine, Jill Augustine Sutherland (Bruce), sister Catya Enos Mandt (Lawrence), many wonderful nieces, nephews, other family members and good friends.
