After a whole day in the woods, we are already immortal.
Douglas Paul Thiesen
May 24, 1952 – December 15, 2024
We’re heartbroken to share that our guy Doug passed away on the evening of December 15th at the age of 72. Born on May 24, 1952, in San Antonio, Texas, Doug lived a life full of love, laughter, adventure, and zany shenanigans. He charmed people wherever he went—often against all odds.
Doug leaves behind his children Milo and Tarisa Ann Thiesen, his sisters Candis Whitney and Linda Reynolds, his brother Leonard Thiesen, his grandson Benjamin Lennox Thiesen-Boggs, his best friend Pete Barron, his ex-wife and good friend Fran Heinith, and his girlfriend Gay Howe, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his former love Leslie Parrish and his parents, Martha Ann Thiesen and Arthur P. Thiesen.
Doug had a deep love for nature and movement. He grew up skiing in Alaska as a child, surfing in Hawaii during his time at Kailua High School, and later worked as a certified ski instructor and Ski Patrol volunteer at Mt. Hood Timberline Lodge. In his later years, he led children’s educational nature walks at Mt. Pisgah Arboretum. Doug was a thoughtful man who surrounded himself with the things that brought meaning to his life—his spiritual practices of Eckankar, the Path of Spiritual Freedom, his children and grandchild, and his many, many dear friends.
Throughout his life, Doug faced significant challenges, including living with Bipolar Schizoaffective Disorder and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). His struggles with mental health deeply shaped his path, inspiring him to become a mental health peer support advocate at Laurel Hill Center, where he provided compassionate care and guidance to others. Doug was also deeply committed to his heart health, regularly attending the Cardiac Rehabilitation program at PeaceHealth Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute where his determination and humor brightened the lives of those around him.
In the 90s, Doug was a mechanic’s assistant who could often be found listening to the Click and Clack Brothers while barreling between hiking trails, mountains, hot springs, music festivals, and beaches. He was also a passionate advocate for human rights, volunteering with PFLAG and singing with the Eugene Peace Choir for a time.
Doug’s infectious sense of humor, immense capacity to live in the moment, and deep connection to nature touched everyone who knew him.
Earlier this year, at his request and in lieu of a funeral service, friends and family gathered on May 25, 2024, at his home for a Hawaiian-themed celebration of his birthday and his life. About 40 friends and family members joined the festivities, singing and playing music, dancing, laughing, and honoring Doug with a poetry reading.
In place of flowers, consider donating to White Bird Clinic and CAHOOTS or the Laurel Hill Center to continue the work Doug cared about so deeply. Alternatively, honor his memory by taking the time to notice the little things on a nature walk with the people you love, or sing the HU Song in a deep embrace.
We will carry his love and laughter with us always.
In Doug's own words:
“Walking the path. Discover! Walk the woods … nature calls … destinations endless …. Meet in the realm of possibility hand in hand. Invigorating conversation … tell the stories. Wheels turn … and down the road. Mountain air … beach waves caress feet. Oolala.”

Hi Dad, it has been a year since you passed. I've been missing you in a deep hurt. Most of the time my memories and thoughts of you are very loving and positive. I feel your energy around me and my family often.... For the good stuff. Especially yesterday when Abbie and I took Ben out to play in the snow for the first time that he could really understand what was going on. He was so giggly and excited to play in the fluffy white stuff. It made me remember all of our winter adventures together and how passionate you always were about getting up to the mountain. You'd always joke ..... "Hey Boss! Sorry I can't come in today, my Dr. Says I have to take this Powder". Hahhahaaa.... I remember skiing around with you when you volunteered for the Mt. Good ski patrol and we would go on rescues and sometimes in between emergencies I could hold on to the back of the snow ski and go really fast. Wow that was fun. You taught me the joy of living in the moment and dedicating unapologetic energy to the things that made you feel most alive, no matter how impractical! I really miss you and I feel heavy today. I love you, Dad. I hope you are out there Skiing your heart out in the afterlife.

He was my best friend and father. I knew he was getting close when I got the call. Later that day, a large group of crows landed in my yard and started making a lot of noise. It was very unusual. It was a sign to go be with him, he sent the crows... and I flew there and was with him. On the night he passed, another group of animals gathered outside my home where my wife Abbie and our son, his grandson, Benjamin had stayed behind in Connecticut. He sent a pack of Coyotes to surround the house, howling beneath the brightest moon they had ever seen. Somewhere around the same time back in Oregon, my mom and I were at his bedside. I got into bed and held him and could feel the calm wash over him with a cat-like purring - a distinct sound as he could no longer speak and hadn’t spoken for a couple of days. We guided a cleansing suggested by close friends. Imagine a waterfall of light washing over you, you are enveloped in the orb of glowing light. All negative energies are washed away into the Earth. The Earth absorbs the negative energy and sprouts it back into new life, new growth, and regenerates itself into positive energy. With this metamorphosis in mind, we charged amethyst and rose quartz by warming them in our hands and by sending our intentions into the gems that had been bathing in the Snow Moon light in the window. We placed the stones nearby and sang the HU Song to honor him. We rubbed his cheek and kissed his forehead. His spirit has been set free. RIP, Dad. I love you, always.

My favorite car is a Honda . It was car of the year several times. Fun to drive, great gas mileage and held its value. However, that is not why this is my favorite car. The beginning of my friendship with Doug was not typical of how friendships start. It happened over a car. The above mentioned Honda Fit to be specific. A 2007 Fit to be even more precise. I had advertised my Fit on Craigs List and Doug was my second caller. No preamble, no price negotiation. He said “You still have your Fit for sale”? “Yes” I answered. “Okay, meet me at my bank and we will do the transaction”. The next day I arrived at his bank. I met this slim fellow with a great smile. We took care of business but did not go our separate ways. We lingered, chatted and found we had many similar interests: skiing, cars, music of the 60-early 70's, food and a love of nature. It was, as the saying goes, the beginning of a wonderful relationship. We began going for long walks, chatting about everything and nothing. Eventually my partner Becky joined our walks with our dog Chuck (Doug took quite a liking to the little Rat Terrier. When we weren't walking I was taking him on errands around town while we chatted about everything and nothing. Little by little his health began to fail and our walks were shorter and more infrequent. I ran errands alone. We began having lunches together (eventually including his girlfriend Gay). Despite his health Doug kept up a positive attitude and continued to have an interest in life. We would still talk about everything and nothing, though the issue of death began to creep into the conversation. He said he was at peace with it. I believed him. He quietly thanked me. The last time I saw him I delivered my pasta meal to him, he had requested it earlier in the month. He was being administered oxygen and looked quite frail. He quietly thanked me. He never did eat it. His health deteriorated quickly and three days later he had passed. I was out of town the day before he died and so was not able to say goodbye except by phone. Did he hear me? I think he knew. He would often talk of his daughter Milo, her partner and eventually a grandchild. He beamed when he would share his pictures of this East Coast family. Milo took great care of him and made sure he was taken care of. I have been fortunate to have met this fine person and thankful for her care of her dad. I should mention Pete here. A long time and close friend of Dougs who was there for Doug throughout the years. Doug always seemed to gather good people around him. So many moments so little time it seems. When ever I see a Honda Fit I think of my friend Doug. Yes, my favorite car.

Prayer of Thanksgiving Eternal God, you have shared with us the life of Doug. Before he was ours, he was yours. For all that Doug has given us to make us what we are, for that of him which lives and grows in each of us, and for his life that in your love will never end, we give you thanks. As now we offer Doug back into your arms, comfort us in our loneliness, strengthen us in our weakness, and give us courage to face the future unafraid. Draw those of us who remain in this life closer to one another, make us faithful to serve one another, and help us to know that peace and joy which is eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Candis Whitney
