Obituary David Ashley Tillman, born on February 24th 1944 in Hartford, CT passed away on August 9th, 2020 in Peoria,AZ. David is survived by his son and daughter in law, Darek and Dianne Tillman. He also was the proud grandfather of Trevar and Taylar Tillman. He leaves behind his sister Susan Cahee. David joins his wife of 30 years, Mildred Tillman, to be with our lord. David preferred to be called "Dave", and so will be for the reminder of this passage. Dave lead a very accomplished and interesting life. He was raised in rural New England and attended the University of New Hampshire where to the surprise of many of his friends, he majored in social work. He eventually made his way to Washington DC, working in the famous Watergate building. This is where he would meet Millie, the love of his life. From there he moved his family to Seattle to pursue his doctorate from the University of Washington. Ever the humble man, he did not like being referred to as "doctor". He would always say "I'm Dave". This launched his career in the world of combustion, becoming renowned in his field of combustion and power generation. He received many awards and accolades, including the prestigious Alex Dow award from Detroit Edison. Dave authored and co-authored over two dozen books. His son was surprised to find several of his books in the Northern Arizona library where Darek was a student. Dave was an avid dog lover and advocate. He raised several dogs throughout his life and even rescued a couple of St. Bernards. If there were dogs nearby, you could bet they would find him and they would immediately bond. Dave also had a consuming passion for building model train layouts. In one house in Yuba City, CA Dave actually built a layout in his living room. It was approximately 40 linear feet and the first thing you would see upon entering his house. He gave talks on modeling at the annual railroad modelers convention. He always made time for his family by making one or two trips to AZ every year. He always made sure to watch his grandchildren compete in athletics. He even once helped by being on the chain gang at one of Trevar's football games. He was completely thrilled when Taylar took up competitive tennis and helped supply racquets. He was, of course, most proud of how competitive his grandchildren were in the classroom. His faith in Christ helped guide his generosity to others. Dave was always willing to lend a helping hand or just a shoulder to cry on. He will be missed by many and leaves behind quite the legacy. Services will be held at Darek and Dianne's house at 9321 W Yukon dr, Peoria AZ on Saturday August 15th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local humane society. That would make Dave very happy.

I met Dave when we were on the same ushering crew at Wesley UMC in Bethlehem. I enjoyed his sense of humor and learned a lot from him. He was very good about putting up with my ignorance about power plants while we talked about model railroading. And I learned a lot more as we dismantled his layout over the winter. I will miss him greatly. My condolences.

Dave mentored me 11 years ago when i pursued my master's degree in Lehigh. He was a very inspiring person who helped me through my graduation project, guided me on giving public speeches and led me to power plant field. I remembered he always sat in the back of the classroom directing my tones while i practiced my speeches. Also Dave was a great host for a BBQ meal. Thank you Dave. May your soul rest in peace.

I was so proud that Uncle David and I shared a middle name, when I was very little my Mom (his older sister Nancy) explained to me what a special name it was and how her beloved brother also had the same name. We also knew him in our family as "Papa Dave", when my children Genevieve and Ethan were little we lived not far away from him in Pennsylvania. They loved his trains and were equally in love with and terrified of the giant dogs. He always treated my children like his own grandchildren. All of our love and condolences, Elizabeth Ashley (Lundberg) Holtsclaw and the Holtsclaw family.

Dave and I worked together on several biomass co-firing studies. Dave was a good guy to work with, smart and with a wealth of experience. And so very nice. He had a wry sense of humor, and could share some great stories. I really liked Dave. I will miss him. I am sorry for your loss

Dave combined being a scholar and an engineer, an engineer who could operate power systems as well as design and analyze processes and operations. I met him in 1992 when his company in Sacramento submitted a winning proposal to EPRI in response to our requesting proposals to assess biomass power technologies. (Stan Harding was part of the team that Dave proposed.) The company was Envirosphere, later Foster Wheeler, and eventually Foster Wheeler in New Jersey. I learned later that the excellent winning proposal was what he had personally written while on a long flight to Korea. Dave became a friend as well as a contractor, and both our technical collaboration and our friendship continued after 2003, after I was an independent consultant rather than an EPRI project manager. After the 2016 election politics was added to our conversation topics, and then, a year or so ago, Christian faith and Bible texts were also added. His most recent long phone call to me included a critique of a biomass energy (biofuel) technology I was working on, and he also made comments on what I had written for my discussion group at First Presbyterian Church in Palo Alto. He was more interested in the Bible and the church group. In fact, about six months ago at his request, I had bought a Bible for him, as an online purchase delivered to Darek's address, a large-print edition and King James Version. This was per Dave's instructions. He had said several times, "I can read Elizabethan English." Evan Hughes, evanhughesphd@yahoo.com [16 August 2020]
