Tom Cheshier

August 18th, 1951 - June 17th, 2019

August 18th, 1951 - June 17th, 2019

Though Tom was stubborn and tough as a buffalo hide, he had the kindest heart and was never afraid to express his love. He was generous to a fault, with both money and time. In fact, we would say his generosity was perhaps one of his most defining characteristics throughout his life. Tom was born on August 18, 1951 in Sterling, the son of Jack R. and Barbara J. (Craig) Cheshier. He served in the Illinois Army National Guard. He married Marcia Searing on November 14, 1987, though they were together far longer, since the early 70s. He began his working career at the age of 12 for Chapman Brothers in Sterling as a welder and later as a foreman. He then went to work as the assistant manager of the Octopus Car Wash in Sterling, later purchasing the business and running it for over 40 years. From riding in rodeos and getting in bar fights to being a loving husband, adoring dad, and owning a thriving business, Tom was as tender as he was tough. Those that were lucky enough to really know him knew how much he loved his family, his animals, nature, old John Wayne movies, his tractors and toys, and heading off to county fairs and flea markets when he had a chance. They also knew his creative and hard-working spirit. He loved giving gifts to everyone he knew. He often put in long hours at his business and was a fair boss to his cherished employees. And he always knew how to have fun in any situation. He is already missed by so many. --- "...And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed." - Maya Angelou, "Where Great Trees Fall"

I am so saddened to hear of Toms passing. He and Marcia treated me like a 2nd daughter and helped me thru some tough times. Even though I had to interview at the Octopus 3 times before getting hired... Later finding out he thought I would be to prissy for the job! They accepted me and my daughter into their home. I had many concersations with Tom passing time at his kitchen table and appreciated each and every moment him and Marcia gave me. I had many trips with Tom to Rockford for the Octopus... He would treat me to a burger at his favorite burger joint and we would never fail to make time to harrass the guys at the other car washes and have long talks about life on the drive back. Even after time and distance I could show up out of no where and we would pick up like I never left. After years Tom even gave my now grown daughter a job at the Car Wash and treated her like his own as well. Wish I would have told you how much you impacted my life and I will be forever greatful! RIP Tom.

I have known Tom and Marcia as well as Zach and Melissa for many years. I am so sorry for their loss. Tom was a good person and had a fun sense of humor. He was generous to those he loved (including the animals he loved) He will be missed.

I'm not sure where to even begin...Tom gave me my very first job almost 20 years ago,I was definitely a spitfire for the old man,but throughout the years he helped me grow into the person I am today,he never gave up on me,always believed in me...He became a 2nd father to me,a mentor,as well as a friend...I'm definitely going to miss his stories, hed pick me up for work at times and I swear he had a story to tell about every place we would drive by...shit man fuck man, your already missed by so many....
