Tom Powell passed away on September 5th, 2024, at the age of 92.

Tom was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on December 27th, 1931.  His mom Nellie Grant Powell was a public school teacher, and Miss Oklahoma of 1922.  His dad Thomas Evan Powell didn’t go to high school, but traveled the world working as a miner, and discovered the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality diamond ever found.  His sister Janette Powell was a public school teacher in Chicago, and had a wicked sense of humor.  His sister Leta Powell Drake was a public television personality who went viral for her unique style of interviewing celebrities.  His brother Jack  Powell is a retired Washington DC police officer who restores vintage cars and is an avid hunter and fisherman; his brother Jim Powell was a history professor at University of California Long Beach.

He enlisted in the Navy out of high school, and served as an Electronics Technician on the USS Epperson.  He went to University of Wisconsin on the GI Bill, and met Mary, his much-loved wife of 66 years, in Madison, Wisconsin.  After college, he went into sales.  This was perfect, because he had an innate ability to easily talk to anyone, an ability he often exercised.  He sold feminine hygiene products in the Dakotas, and, ultimately, industrial ventilation equipment for Aerovent in Ohio.  He was extremely good at his work, but never let it compromise his dedication to his wife Mary and his three sons: Ken, John, and Tom.  He was a much bigger part of their lives than most husbands and fathers of his generation.  He also was genuinely loved by his five grandchildren, and was a big part of their lives.  He passed on the importance of balancing  dedication to work and family to his sons, along with a love of travel, sailing, and Broadway musicals.

In retirement, Tom and Mary traveled to some of the places they always wanted to see, including Italy, England, Norway, Russia, China, and Hawai’i.  They lived in the home they raised their family in, in large part thanks to John, who was his dad’s caregiver the last few years, as Alzheimer’s took its toll.  We count ourselves very fortunate that Tom’s personality remained largely untouched by Alzheimer’s.  He was happy and gracious even as his memory failed him, often remarking on what a beautiful day it was, how stunning the sunset over Lake Erie was, or how much he appreciated the food he was eating or the help that was offered.

He will be remembered for his humor, his positivity, his strength, his kindness, and his generosity.  He looked out for his family, his friends, the families of his friends, and the friends of his family.

Being lucky enough to grow up a car ride away from Tom and Mary made for so many lasting memories and wonderful traditions with my grandparents. One of the strongest associations I have with visiting Euclid was how there was always music. I am convinced that Tom knew every single song in the whole world. When I was young, I would often try to stump him with new songs that I learned in school music class. I thought I had him with "Chickery Chick" given all of it's fast nonsense lyrics, but of course, as soon as I started in ("Granddad, do you know THIS song?") he was singing along with me. And a highlight of every birthday, whether in person or over the phone, was Mary playing Happy Birthday on the piano while Tom sang the words. I feel so incredibly lucky for all of the memories I have with Tom, and am proud to be his granddaughter. I love you Granddad!

When I was young I remember noticing how strong my granddad’s hands were. He would chase me around the house as I giggled, and when he caught me he’d pick my up or tickle me. This was something I remember having a blast doing, and even at a young age the strength of his hands and his hugs surprised me. Nobody else - parents, friends, parents of friends, teachers - gave the kind of hugs he did. It never hurt, it never scared me, it was just strong. I know now that it was partially due to his past in the navy, but I think it was also just who he was: there was always a strength to him. He loved with all his might, and I could feel it. He didn’t let anything stop him from living a strong life for close to a century. And on top of that, he never let his strength in all areas stop him from being kind. He always greeted me with a hug and a smile, even when he didn’t know who I was. He always said goodbye saying he was excited to see me again. He always offered help when he noticed I might need it, throughout my life but even when he wasn’t sure exactly what was happening he still wanted to help where he could. The words strong and kind are the first two I think of to describe him, and he’s the first person I think of who is both those things. And him playing with me when I was young is the perfect example of that in my mind. Laughing, smiling, entertaining a small child, mighty hugs, running without fatigue, loving so so fiercely. I am so thankful to have these memories of him, to be able to remember him in this way, and to have had him in my life in the first place, being able to call him family. He will be intensely missed by me, as well as many others, as I know that his love, exceptionally strong and kind, was felt by everyone he met throughout his life.

Tom was a perfect mix of firm and gentle. I loved that about him. When I think of Tom, I think of Lake Geneva. Of boating and fishing. Of his jokes and laughter. Of his generosity. I think of Thanksgivings at our house and Christmases in Euclid. And the many family photos that were taken. I think of 4th of July celebrations in Euclid - THE BEST! And Tom getting the honor of raising the flag. And those delicious Cornish hens he gilled. I think of Tom and Mary coming to celebrate so many special occasions with our children. I love you Tom! I love you Mary! I thank you for raising Ken into the wonderful man he is and welcoming me into your family!
