Scott Gibbs was born in Spokane, Washington on February 8, 1947. He died at home on September 7, 2021. He was 74 years old. He was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Mead High School (1965) and University of Washington, BSME (1969). He spent his working life as a mechanical engineer for several Seattle area consulting engineering firms engaged in the design of municipal water supply and waste water projects. He was a licensed mechanical and civil engineer in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Always an avid shooter and amateur gun smith of sorts, Scott participated in all types of shooting events. Scott particularly enjoyed hunting ducks near Milltown on the South Fork of the Skagit River. Duck dogs were the best part of duck hunting for Scott. He loved to fish in Oregon and Alaska. He also enjoyed cars, especially old ones and worked on the restoration of his first car, a 1939 Studebaker Commander. Later he sold that car and bought a 1940 Studebaker Commander, a 1932 Pontiac Coupe, and a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr. In his later years he especially enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model airplanes. Scott was treated for lung cancer in 1994 and he said this was the real beginning of his life. He was fond of saying that surviving lung cancer showed him the value of each and every day, and that the important things in life may not have much to do with our day to day routine. He fought cancer again several times, finally succumbing to it. He knew the end of life can come quickly and that there is a good feeling knowing that everything that can be done has been. He is survived by Vickie Gibbs, his wife and loving companion throughout his life. They were married 53 years. He was the son of Flora E. and Forrest L. Gibbs, Sr. of Spokane, Washington, and was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Tim N. Gibbs and Forrest L. Gibbs, Jr. A virtual Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Nov. 23, 2021

I've know Scott for over 60 years. From: • Playing football together at Mead High School • Living in the same dorm our Freshman year at University of Washington • Sharing our first apartment ($82.50 per month) • Him taking me in my Junior year when I became a homeless student • Endless Pinochle and Hearts card games between classes in the Hub • Straight thru drives to Denver with a full tank of gas and a case of beer • All night cramming for tests or helping Fleeta finish an art project that was due. • Always helping me with the next car repair that was inevitably going to happen • Scott in my wedding party. My folks rented Scott and Vicki a room. • Scott and Vickie married 1 week before Fleeta and me, I Always got a call to remind me of our anniversary. • Small dinners and parties as married couples. • Visits to Ketchikan to fish and mess around. Gaffing his arm in attempt to kill a fish. • XC ski trip that ended their enthusiasm for Nordic skiing. • Alpine skiing when wives were trapped on ski lift. • Get togethers with Terry Truman and LK Gray. • Lunches at Chinook's at Salmon Bay • Flying RC airplanes at Magnuson Park. • Being chauffeured around in neat classic cars. • Zoom get togethers from the Versailles. If I could put pen to paper like my favorite author, Farley Mowat, there could be several novels and multiple short stories produced from this long and wonderful friendship. Although Scott came across as a general curmudgeon, it always surprised me how much Scott cared about people. He truly wanted to know how you and those around you were doing. At class reunions his memory of what his classmates had done in High School and after was amazing. You will be forever missed. Goodbye Scott.

Scott and Vickie at Bob and Fleeta's 25th wedding anniversary party. That made it Scott and Vickie's 25 year plus 7 days anniversary. Scott always reminded Bob that his anniversary was coming up so Bob wouldn't be in trouble!

Scott and I spent many a family get together comparing notes on our waterfowling adventures and although we always ended those conversations with promise to hunt together, we never got it done. Today's hunt is for youScott. I hope there plenty of birds by your side. "Eyes to the sky" my friend.

Fleeta and Scott at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Show. Scott was always involved in our life and interested in what we we're doing. Visiting us in Alaska, flying model airplanes, helping with drainage ditches, or checking out the wooden boats, he was ready to go. Like a part of our family.

Scott was my closest friend in life. We met in 1982 at CH2M Hill in Bellevue, Washington, where we both worked. I knew that Scott and I would become friends when I saw the photographs on his desk of his golden retriever, Amber, his hunting cabin on the South Fork of the Skagit River, and hunting scenes from the Skagit marsh. Over the next 39 years, we spent many days each year hunting ducks and geese on the east and west sides of Oregon and Washington, along with a few longer trips to Alberta and South Dakota to hunt geese and pheasants. We also regularly fished the lower Columbia River (for sturgeon) and the coastal rivers of Oregon (for steelhead). But the Skagit marsh was always my favorite and I still make trips to the cabin to keep it well maintained, to hunt the marsh, and to decompress from work. Time moves on whether we want it to or not. I miss Scott very much but cherish all the good times and memories. My heart goes out to Vickie. I wish her all the best for the future.
