Eleanor Aguilar: Please accept my condolences to you and your family. Leida asked if I had a memory that I could share with you about your dear Mother. I apologize it is late, but here it is. I was so sorry other about Sarah's passing. We were friends for many years working for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. She was one of those truly gracious individuals who always had a positive outlook. Some of my happy memories were when we first moved to the new Hall of Administration and she and I would eat our lunch in the 8th floor lunch room and talk about our dates and her favorite guy, George. She would share her excitement about her engagement and wedding plans. Or, we would run down on Board day to see a celebrity and if we were lucky, possibly take a picture with them (I still have the one with Gary Cooper). It is comforting for me to remember the many good memories. Because the years passed and we didn't see one another, I always looked forward to exchanging cards with her. I know that her many friends share your grief and I send my sincerest sympathy. Sarah's friendship was a gift that I will cherish.

LEIDA ERICKSON REMEMBERS SARAH FLORES: Sarah Flores first came into my life in December 1965 when I was 18 years old, the newly hired receptionist in Supervisor Frank Bonelli's Office. She was on maternity leave, pregnant with Michelle, and came into the office for the Secretaries' Christmas luncheon. I had never used an IBM Executive typewriter before and found correcting errors overwhelming with the required number of carbon copies and needing to know how many units each letter was. The front office secretaries had tired of my numerous questions. Sarah was the Chief Deputy's secretary, way up in the hierarchy of a County Supervisor's Office. When Sarah saw my dilemma making yet another typo, she sat down in my chair and proceeded to patiently teach me how to correct my error with her special process of using an eraser, chalk and repeated strikes of the key for a good quality repair. She said, "It's not as important to be a good typist as it is to be a good eraser." Sarah instantly became my hero, and has been ever since. The following year Sarah became the first Latina Executive Secretary in the County. She was chosen by Supervisor Frank Bonelli, who always had a special place in his heart for Sarah. Her mantra was "I think I can do this!" and she worked efficiently and effectively to streamline the office's operation while teaching all of us how to help constituents navigate the County's bureaucracy. She managed to balance a demanding job, George's schedule of evening classes at CSULA, and a growing family with her faith, good humor, and genuine hard work. I recall the Easter Sarah brought in all 4 daughters in white eyelet dresses with lavender trim that she had sewed and stayed up all night hemming. It was her gift to Frank Bonelli, who was delighted. We also got to hear good stories, such as when one of you daughters awoke from a nightmare, and Sarah went outside with a fly swatter to bang on the window screen demanding the monster leave and never come back! She was fearless! In 1972 Frank Bonelli died while in office. Sarah kept a cool head and assured all of us that things would work out. Pete Schabarum was appointed the new First District Supervisor, and kept the staff. About this time, newly elected San Diego Supervisor Pete Wilson sent his staff to learn how our office was managed because of its good reputation. Sarah was also one of the founding members of the L.A. County Secretarial Council, designed to enhance secretaries' management skills to allow them to transition to management positions. Sarah became one of the first female Deputies among County Supervisors' staffs, and was instrumental in the formation of the LA County Women's Commission. Some made sure she had to learn the hard way, but she continued to do an outstanding job. She took the assignments no one else wanted to be bothered with and challenged herself to learn more. Soon she became an accomplished Field Deputy in the San Gabriel Valley and developed a rapport with every leader at the Federal, State and City level representing the same constituency she served. Along the way, she would take time to give special attention to those who needed support and recognition, like the LA County Chicano Employees Association, among many. Yet again, Sarah was a champion. When she ran for First District County Supervisor, she won the Primary, receiving 36% of the vote in a 9-candidate field the day after a judge ruled no Hispanic could win the way the First District boundary lines were drawn. She lost in the January Special Election after a judge ruled she and the second runner-up would have to move within the newly created First District boundary lines. She was also forced to raise money over the holidays when the judges ruled MALDEF supported Gloria Molina and Art Torres could use their existing City Council and Senate campaign funds. Did I mention the 1991 Gulf War with Iraq was going on? So few people voted in that special election that Sarah had more votes cast for her alone in the 1990 Primary than the total number of votes cast in the January 1991special election. She took her loss as God's plan for her. Mike Antonovich's Fifth District now included the Foothill Cities of the San Gabriel Valley, and he needed Sarah's expertise and rapport with leaders to welcome a new constituency. Sarah and Judy Stringer made a good team in Mike's San Dimas Field Office for 6 years until Sarah retired and Judy transferred to the Department of Public Works. We County people who have gathered for lunches treasure the memories of those who have gone before us--George, Irene Comaduran, Judy Stringer, and Etchie Mura. I am certain they welcomed Sarah, and I picture Sarah and George dancing together now. For me, personally, I am grateful for having had Sarah in my life for 55 years. She is without a doubt my hero for loving me and guiding me throughout the years. On our outings together, she would bring me up to speed on the news of all of you and your families. She was proud of each and every one of her daughters, sons-in-law (all good cooks), grandkids, and great-grandkids. Again and again, she would impress upon me her values--faith, family, and helping others. Her mantra was turning the "negatives" in life into "positives." To do so, she would use genuine concern and good humor. I bet we've all enjoyed her "goodie bags". Mine came with a variety of things--candy, gum, Kleenex, candles, coasters, lip balm, etc. So loving and generous. To my dear friend, Sarah, I say "Thanks for being you and all the memories we made together. May you rest in peace."

I feel beyond blessed to have had this beautiful woman as one of my second mom's growing up! From pool parties, toilet papering nights and slumber parties in the van, to endless Girl Scout trips and school events she (and George) were a huge part of my childhood. Her love and kindness was never ending even when we didn't deserve that kindness! I remember one day Lucretia and I decided to be extra naughty and have a baby powder fight in Nana and Lulu's room and when I tell you that powder was everywhere I mean it was everywhere!! Instead of screaming and yelling (which I have no idea how she kept that all in) she calmly made us go downstairs and sit at opposite sides of the room in time out to think about what we had done. I truly treasure ever moment I spent at the Flores house throughout my life! I know that both of our parents are happily together again looking over us from heaven, maybe they are even having a camp out together talking about old times! I love you all very much ❤️

From Ledia Erickson: While in the kitchen loading my dishwasher, I thought about all the important people Sarah rubbed shoulders with: Msgr. Diomartich of St. Anthony's Croatian Church on Grand Avenue, near the Civic Center in Downtown LA. He was Sarah's father figure; Sarah helped him with Church bookkeeping. He organized the annual Croatian picnic that Mike Antonovich and his father supported (Mike went to John Marshall High School, but was 2 years behind Sarah). When Mike honored Msgr. Diomartich for his 95th birthday at a Board Meeting, I went down to the Board Room to tell Msgr. how Sarah Martinez Flores had told me all about him and what he meant to her. Msgr. grabbed my hands, and said "I L-O-V-E Sarah" in a sing-songy way. I will never forget it. Gov. Pete Wilson - she served as his appointee on the State Parks Commission President George H.W. and Barbara Bush after your family was named Hispanic Family of the Year Gov. George Deukmejian LA Mayor Richard Riordan Jaime Escalante, Math teacher at Garfield High School and hero of movie "Stand By Me." I wasn't close to them, but Sarah was. Again, she was my hero in oh, so many ways. Then I thought of Loretta (dunno her last name), who sang so well, and how Sarah wanted her to sing for special events. I also reflected on the story she told of having been approached by a former inmate at a Probation Camp who she had given a cheap-o County certificate to upon his completion of the program. He told her his life had been turned around by that event, by what she had said, and her belief in him. It made him believe in himself and that he was capable of doing whatever he set out to do in life. She continues to be my hero. No one else like her. I'm glad I told her how much she meant to me, just in case one of us got COVID. It is good for me to remember Sarah and George and your whole family.

Many of the best memories I have from my childhood took place in the Flores house. Sarah came into my life the first day of kindergarten- I was clinging to my mom sobbing, begging her to take me back home. Next to me in the room was another little girl, also crying. And clinging to her mom asking to go back home. Sarah walked Lucretia over to me and she took our hands and put them together. She told both of us that everything was going to be great and that we had each other and were going to be friends. She was right, from that moment on I felt like I was a member of the Flores family. That was 36 years ago! I have a million memories to share- I hope I get to sit down with the Flores girls sometime soon and share them all in person. She was a shining example of what an intelligent, hardworking, passionate, woman can accomplish. She was always poised, professional and put together. She was always kind and ready to help. She was encouraging and supportive. She was funny. Sarah, George and the whole Flores family have been a blessing in my life for 36 years and I am a better person because of all of them. You are all loved so much. ❤️❤️

Mama Sarah was the epitome of warmth and love. I have the best memories of her always encouraging us during our St. Lucy days - always cheering us on no matter what we were doing, always supporting our funny adventures and always being our biggest cheerleader (right next to Papa George!) at all of our song & dance competitions. Best of all, truly, was how she ALWAYS led by example, in every part of her life...Her strong faith, her unwavering commitment to her family, to her community...her selflessness in always looking out for others, her diligence and strong work ethic, her optimistic outlook and positive energy...she led her life in ways that so many admired, just by being herself and staying true to her own beliefs and values. I always looked up to her with so much respect and admiration. I feel so fortunate to have known her beauty both inside and out. Words cannot express how greatly missed she will be to us here on earth, but without a doubt, heaven has gained a true angel to watch over us. Sending all of our love and prayers to the entire Flores family during this difficult time. We love you so very much. Love, Traci
