Rune joined WFP in 2003 as a Consultant (Port Captain) in our humanitarian assistance operations in the Middle East and throughout the years worked in numerous WFP Field locations including Pakistan, Angola, Djibouti and lastly Ethiopia. Since 2016, due to his exceptional expertise of dry port operations, Rune often assisted WFP as personnel of a valued stand-by partner, the Danish Refugee Council. He made decisive and lasting contributions to strategic shipping operations with his expertise and extensive experience. He was highly respected and loved by his colleagues and was known for his straightforwardness and his heart of gold. He will be greatly missed.

Jeg har sejlet med Rune som Styrmand i flere år, det vil jeg savne, det var altid hyggeligt at sejle sammen med Rune. Hvil i fred Rune.

Rune. Too much to say. Never enough space. I met Rune when I arrived Jerusalem on my way to Gaza in September 2002. I entered the office of our Head of Logistics and here was Rune, large and bright. Little did I know that he would become one of the best friends ever. We were three colleagues that were alone for Christmas, Rune went through the entire ritual of obtaining pork, cabbage, potatoes (small), and all the other small things belonging to a typical Danish Christmas dinner. He proceeded to cook one of the best dinners I have ever had. Rune, at that time, was assigned to Ashdod and I was in Gaza, so we were in almost daily touch via both phone and some strange, newly invented thing called skype (we both agreed that this thing has no future). Very often, we would meet in Ashdod and I would learn something new each and every time. Following Gaza, we lost touch, workwise, but definitely not on the private side. Rune went on to Angola and other places, I went to Zimbabwe, Pakistan and other countries, but in spite of the physical distance, we would be in regular touch throughout. Whenever we happened to be in Denmark at the same time, we would find the time to meet and discuss the situation around the world, often over a great, open Danish sandwich. During the past months, after Rune came to Ethiopia, he was a bit frustrated that he was not able to do what he came to do. During our last conversation, he was already in hospital. He mentioned he was looking very much forward to being medevac’d home to Denmark so he, again, could be with his wonderful wife and all other family members. Unfortunately, this was not to be. I received the news about Rune’s death on Sunday afternoon and was devastated. I had only just spoken to him some 30 hours ago, how could he, one of the best persons to walk the earth, be gone so suddenly. The memory of Rune, his kindness, his larger than life personality, his professionalism, will always be with me. May he rest in eternal peace. Æret være hans minde.

I have fond memories of working together with Rune during the 2015 Pakistan earthquake response, where we assisted international teams with the setup of base camps and later Rune joined me in Battagram Area office to manage a vast Logistics operation. I will never forget the time when we had rented a nearby hotel as the temporary office and there we were sitting across each other and one of the aftershocks of the earth quake was so strong and we sat there staring at each other and Rune of course afterwards had good laugh and we made a "toast" after checking all was fine and accounted for, later on the building was checked a huge crack had appeared and had to evacuate. My sincere condolences to Rune family and friends. My dear friend and colleague Rune wherever you are, sending you LOVE and may PEACE be with you. Zeff

My deepest sympathies to Rune's family. Rune was a great port captain; he had the calm and kindness of those who have nothing to prove.

We shall keep Rune in our memories. Forever he was a great character, extremely kind and very human. Rune was a strong professional and en expert port Captain. I remember him when he opened for WFP an office and warehouse in the Port of Ashdod, around 2002. He was very proud of his staff, all ladies (smiley), and it was clear when visiting this was a good team. I encountered Rune occasionally after, once in Islamabad after the earthquake in 2005. He was among the very first staff to hit the ground and every hour was counting that week just after the earthquake, when lives could still be saved and before it would be too late. After few hours brief he when on by road to take his duties in the mountains. Though this kind of logistics was not his speciality he was hearth fully engaged and we could count on him. Last time I was in touch with him was on the phone, we were looking for port captains for Yemen in 2015. He was onboard a ship on the phone that time, and it was so great to hear his voice. We lost a valuable friend and colleague. May he Rest In Peace

In memory of Captain Rune Bergsby, Captain Rune was a brilliant Port Captain that loved his work, did it with great passion, in a benevolent way and a big smile. Rune was a good supervisor, colleague and friend. I was honored to learn the secrets of the profession from Rune and he was an inspiration to my career. I will always remember the good times… My most sincere condolences to the family and friends. Ronen.Reuven
