Rosalind, our beloved mother, passed away peacefully on October 13th after her 97-year journey that started in New York. After meeting and marrying our father, Herb, they eventually moved to San Francisco's Russian Hill where her sons, Douglas and Matthew, were born. Their 3rd son, Garrett, was born when they moved to the hills of Mill Valley where they lived in a beautiful home for the next 35 years. All three of us felt her consistent love as we navigated the twists, turns and adventures of childhood.
Our home in Mill Valley was also where mom and dad hosted many gatherings including the long-standing tradition of monthly live chamber music. Dad played violin and was accompanied by highly accomplished musicians, some from the SF symphony. At these events, there was a wonderful array of guests and fascinating conversations often sparked by mom's gift to interact and share her infectious laughter. It was also here that mom and dad hosted many holiday meals with our extended families which provided a way for us all to connect and feel a greater sense of belonging.
After dad passed, mom moved back to the city and lived in a contemporary Pacific Heights apartment with spectacular views of the city and bay. She loved looking at the dynamic cityscape as well as walking through the neighborhoods which inevitably included a chocolate desert along the way.
Mom had a deep appreciation of culture and the arts and was deeply involved in the SF contemporary art scene exploring modern art in its many forms. Her apartment showcased some unusual art pieces that demonstrated her ability to see beyond the conventional and helped us expand our visual senses and imaginations. After 25 years, it was time to move into an assisted living situation and her clear choice was a home in Terra Linda with 5 other elderly woman and two live-in caregivers. She was truly happy in this environment and enjoyed consistent walks with her sons, which, true to form, also included a stop for some chocolate, particularly Rocky Road ice cream.
There is so much more to say about our mother, but it was extraordinarily clear to all of us that she loved family. She loved seeing each of her sons marry wonderful and intelligent women and talking with her grandchildren. So much of her focus was on the happiness of her family and almost every conversation was devoted to wanting to know how each of us was doing and what was new in our lives. We felt her non-stop love and deep appreciation for each of us. In this way, mom seemed to live her final years fully devoted to family and deriving deep gratification from each of our individual journeys. We will miss her more than words can convey and will honor her love of family and care of others in ways we live our lives ahead.

I would like to send my sympathy to Garrett, Doug, Matthew and their children. Beginning in early high school I would visit the house frequently and Roz was always kind and welcoming to me. She would ask me how I was, how school was going and, occasionally, would I like to stay for dinner. The Lawrence Family had a very handsome home, with a wonderful view of Mt. Tamalpais, and something mysterious to me at the time...a "Lanai" where Garrett and Matthew would play music with their friends. My very first jam sessions were held in this lania with Garrett's band, including Blake Richardson, Zack Smith, Scott Kholer (?) and others whose names may escape me now. All this is to say that Dr. and Roz Lawrence were cultured, kind people who enjoyed seeing their sons having fun with their pack of friends around their pool, or lounging around the terrace, or the now famous and storied "lania". Godspeed to a kind and caring mother.

I have so many wonderful memories of your mom. She was SO kind to me as a teen and young woman, always including me and making me feel like part of the family. She had great taste in clothes and I was lucky enough to get some of her beautiful hand-me-downs and an occasional shopping trip when I was on a thrift store/student budget. I can picture her incredible eyes and beautiful smile, can hear her infectious laugh, and know just how much she loved you three and your families. No matter what her age (and 97 is AMAZING), her passing is still so hard and I'm sending you all love and virtual hugs.

Hello- I met Roz through the Architecture & Design Forum at SFMoma. She was warm and friendly and extremely astute in her visual senses. She always shared her opinions about the various exhibits we toured on and I learned a lot from her. She got my name wrong and called me "Bobbie" instead of "Dottie" but we would laugh about it and then I told her not to worry. They sounded similar and it was our joke. Such a lovely woman and she lived a very full and happy life.

The loss of your mother deeply saddens me. Your mom was an amazing lady, and I feel privileged to have known her and take care of her, I really like her because shes very good to me, specially when I got pregnant and still working until 9months when she saw my belly is big she always say, “Don’t worry about me, think of your baby” and everytime I’m talking to my first child thru video call, i will show to rosalind and shes very happy seeing babies. Thats why i love ros. And one more thing i wont forget, is one time i heard something in the kitchen at the middle of the night i went to check and you know what, i saw rosalind getting ice cream in the fridge
