Recuerdos

You've got to end that song on a high note — that's your trademark.

Ronald Eugene Dove was born on September 7, 1935, in Herndon, Virginia, the only son of Paul S. Dove, a Fairfax County police sergeant, and Catherine Pearl Dove. From his earliest years, music was his calling — he sang "Away in a Manger" in a grade school play, joined his high school glee club for four years, and performed with a group called The Rockers long before he ever set foot on a professional stage. After graduating, Dove enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed on a buoy tender off the coast of Baltimore. By night, he sang Elvis Presley covers in local pubs and clubs — an informal apprenticeship that stoked the fire of his professional ambitions. Completing his service in 1959, he returned to Baltimore and formed Ronnie Dove and the Belltones, a band that played up and down the East Coast, sometimes seven nights a week, recording their debut single "Lover Boy" and a cover of "Party Doll" on Decca Records. The breakthrough came when Dove moved to Nashville in 1964 and signed with Diamond Records. His single "Say You" cracked the Billboard Hot 100 at number 40, launching a remarkable run: "Right or Wrong" reached the Top 20, and in 1965 alone he placed five singles on the charts. Billboard named him Top Singles Artist, Top Easy Listening Artist, and Top Easy Listening Selling Artist that same year; Cashbox awarded him Best Singles Male Vocalist, Best LP Male Vocalist, and Best R&B Male Vocalist. In the mid-to-late 1960s he recorded 23 consecutive Top 10 hits, appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, and hosted his own syndicated television program, The Ronnie Dove Show. His smooth, flexible tenor voice — warm enough to melt a room, precise enough to land every high note cleanly — made fans feel he was singing to them and them alone. In 1967, Elvis Presley himself pulled Dove aside and told him: "You've got to end that song on a high note, like you did on 'Say You,' because that's your trademark." The 1970s brought change. Dove stepped back from the pop charts, purchased a nightclub called The Carriage House in Augusta, Georgia, and pursued his other great love: golf. By the early 1980s, the oldies revival pulled him back to touring, and he filled venues with audiences of more than 5,000 fans a night. In 1989, he quietly left the road to care for his mother after she was diagnosed with two aneurysms, remaining devotedly at her side until her death in 1991 — a sacrifice that spoke as clearly of his character as any hit record. He resumed touring and continued performing for more than three decades, retiring with his final concert on May 14, 2023, at the Dundalk American Legion in Maryland. Ronnie Dove passed away on September 15, 2026, at his home in Pasadena, Maryland, just eight days after celebrating his 91st birthday. He is survived by his wife, Marty. For over sixty years, his voice was the sound of romance on the American airwaves — and it never lost its warmth.

Official Biography

Despite his natural 'boyish' good looks and charismatic stage presence, Ronnie didn't believe in positioning himself as a teen idol like many of his contemporaries of 1964 - the year he released his first chart-buster, 'Say You'.
