My husband Mitch and I traveled several times with Ron and Gail over the last 12 years. In Western Canada's National Parks, Costa Rica, Michigan, south western US National Parks and in Florida. So many fun times and adventures: Hiking to a glacier near Jasper, walking on a glacier in the Canadian Rockies. Searching for sloths and iguanas in Costa Rica. Ron regaled us with all manner of stories and jokes wherever we went, always punctuated by singing and strumming. Not all friends make good travel companions, Ron (and Gail too) have been exceptional to be with on the road! We were figuring out our next adventure when COVID cut all our plans short.

Ron, along with 3 other guys, shared an apartment at the University of Minnesota. He was always a willing participant for a night of schooners of beer at Mannings Cafe even though his academic load was considerably tougher than mine. Since I was an English and Journalism major, I was selected too edit and proofread his PhD thesis. Never mind that I knew nothing about the content. He was a great friend and it is a shame he had to leave everyone so suddenly and at such a young age.

Shake Rag Coffee Talk began in Melrose in 2009. Ron Schmidt was a cherished musician on the accordion and guitar accompanied by Walter Jones on percussion. As we moved to other locations they followed, sometimes the two of them, other times with the People's Band or Moderate Speed Band. Ron performed last with Coffee Talk December 5, 2019. We miss him.
