A builder of businesses, a champion of communities, a devoted husband and father.

Robert Kenneth Irving ONB was a force of quiet determination — a Canadian industrialist whose hands-on leadership, warm humor, and deep roots in Moncton, New Brunswick shaped communities and industries across the country for nearly five decades. Born on December 3, 1954, Robert was the grandson of Kenneth Colin Irving, the legendary founder of the Irving Group of Companies, and the son of James K. and Jean E. Irving. He attended Hyde School, graduating in 1973 — recognized by his peers as sincerely diligent and possessed of good humor — before earning his Bachelor of Business Administration from Acadia University in 1977. He joined J.D. Irving Limited that same year, beginning a career that would touch nearly every corner of the family's sprawling enterprise. Robert's most defining achievement was Cavendish Farms. What began in 1980 as a single frozen vegetable plant in Prince Edward Island grew under his leadership into North America's fourth-largest producer of frozen potato products, with processing facilities spanning Canada and the United States and a dedicated research centre investing in the future of Canadian agriculture. A founding member of Food Producers of Canada, he was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2023 in recognition of contributions that stretched far beyond the balance sheet. In the early 2000s, Robert became Co-CEO of J.D. Irving Limited alongside his brother Jim, a partnership built on mutual trust and operational synergy. Known for walking the floors and engaging with employees at every level, he believed that leadership lived in personal connection as much as in strategy. Beyond business, Robert gave generously to the communities he called home — supporting youth education, literacy, health initiatives, and sports development throughout Greater Moncton. He served as President of the Moncton Wildcats since 1996, steering the QMJHL franchise to a championship in 2025. He and his wife Jill shared a deep passion for dressage, supporting elite Canadian equestrian athletes through their Windhaven Farm since 1988. Among his many honors: the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame (2014), the Order of Moncton (2020), and — in 2024 — the Order of New Brunswick, the province's highest distinction. Robert passed away peacefully at his Moncton home on May 18, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife of 39 years, Jill, and their four children, Megan, Meredith, Olivia, and R.J. He leaves behind four grandchildren, a transformed industry, and a community richer for his presence.
