Loved Ones

Passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the age of 97. Rita is remembered as a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. Indeed, all who knew her appreciated how she would lean in and listen intently, making each person feel special and important.

Rita was born April 8, 1926, in Crestline, Ohio, the daughter of William Meyers and Helen McDermott Meyers. From the age of fourteen, upon the early passing of her mother, Rita helped her father raise her younger siblings Patricia and Edward. She attended Ohio University where she was an active member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and graduated with a BA in Business. On October 10, 1953, she married the love of her life, Harold Dougherty, at Old Saint Mary’s Church in San Francisco. They were married for 52 years before Harold’s passing in 2005. Rita was the proud mother of children, William Dougherty, wife Emily Rainey; Kathleen Boyd, husband Richard; James Dougherty, wife Tina Amidon; Mary Dougherty, husband Brian Carilli. Adored grandmother of Hannah; Erin, Jeffrey, and Caitlin; Jessica, Mark, Patrick, Sam and Annie. Rita joyfully welcomed being a great grandmother to nine.

Coupled with her empathetic nature, Rita possessed a sharp intellect. She was an engaged citizen throughout her life on matters of the world and in the local community. Volunteering was intrinsic to Rita’s caring nature, and she was a longtime docent at the Oakland Museum and donated her time and energy to many other charitable foundations during her life. St. Paul’s Towers Retirement Community was Rita’s home for over a decade at the time of her passing. During her golden years, she enjoyed her many friends and activities there.

At a later date, Rita will be interred beside her husband, in a private family service at The National Cemetery in Dixon, California. Those who wish to remember Rita in a special way may make gifts in her memory to The Oakland Museum, 1000 Oak Street, Oakland, CA 94067 (www.museumca.org), or to St. Paul’s Towers, A Circle of Friends, 100 Bay Place, Oakland, CA 94610.

Myself and my mother, Betita Martinez, living in San Francisco, would attend "West Coast" family reunions at the Dougherty home in Berkeley, when my mother's beloved cousin Mary Rainey was in town. Being an only child, I got such a happy thrill from being surrounded by relations, and Rita always made me feel so very welcome and indeed part of the family. Of course, you know that Rita was a serious fan of live theater, and that being my work, we would talk about attending shows together. Alas, we were only able to arrange to do that once, but it was such a pleasure. With much affection to all of you. Tessa

My earliest memories of Rita are from when my siblings and I were young and in elementary school with Bill and Emily. Those are scanty memories, but Rita's big smile I can never forget. Over the subsequent years we have shared such diverse blessings as a fulfilling service to the Oakland Museum and a love of Raineys. On any shared occasion with Rita and Hal you knew they were happy to see you. I have always felt extraordinarily welcome in their company, whether at their home or mine, and am grateful for their interest in my life and that of my family. At each and every visit Rita has always had that big smile. Rita's apartment at St Paul's had an expansive view, and considering it now, I see it as a good match for her wide curiosity and her big heart. When we are all on the other side, I know she'll be there with her happy grin to welcome us all.

As I have moved through the decades from “barely conscious” to “senior citizen," Rita has been a constant of support and encouragement. Among the many influential roles she has played for me and my family include grade school office manager, confirmation sponsor, mother-in-law, grandmother, museum-buddy, sharing adventurous cuisine, corporate-grind empathizer, welcoming host to visiting friends and kin, and perhaps most endearingly, what she was to my mother Mary Rainey, who told others on numerous occasions, “Rita Dougherty is the best friend I ever had.” Her love, support, and friendship will always be with us.
