Richard Furlow

Life Story

Richard Furlow the son of Sarah Lee McDaniel and David Pinkett Jr II.  He was born on February 13. 1960. Richard was many things to many people. He was a devoted son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, co-worker and friend.  He was fondly known by many different names:  Rich, Big Rich, Richie, and Uncle Richie.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, the Borough of Brooklyn was his biggest influence. He loved Brooklyn. Rich received his early education in Brooklyn.  He attended elementary school in Bay Ridge and Junior high School in Bensonhurst Brooklyn.  He later graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School. Rich was quick to tell you that when he started at Brooklyn Tech that was the second year that they allowed women to attend. He was a historian and had an incredible memory. He loved history especially black history. Rich eventually left Brooklyn to attended Oberlin College in Ohio.  He would be quick to tell you it was the first liberal arts school to allow African Americans to attend. Rich was the patriarch and historian of the family, if you wanted to know who, what, when, and where and why, he would know.

Upon returning to New York, Rich began his career on Wall Street with the Bank of New York.  He eventually joined The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.  He enjoyed a long and successful career for 33 years.  In 2017, he retired from his position as Tax Compliance Manager. Apart from his career with the State of New York, Rich enjoyed sporting events, concerts, and plays. One of his biggest joys and passions was bringing others together for ski trips, sporting events, plays, and concerts. Richard Furlow was many things to many people.

Rich was the type of person who could walk into a room of strangers and could have a conversation with everyone. He definitely had the gift of gab. He had the ability to make everyone feel special with every conversation you had with him.

He was preceded in death by his mother Sarah Lee McDaniel, father David Levon Pinkett Jr II, his brother Eric Pinkett and sister Rochelle McDaniel.

 Those left to cherish fond memories are his siblings; Cynthia Armstead, David (Joann) Pinkett Jr III, Nanette Smith, Freida Nichols, Gregory Pinkett, Elizabeth Pinkett, Therman (Daysha) McDaniel, Herman McDaniel;  nephew Shawn McDaniel whom he raised, and many, nephews, nieces, aunts, cousins and friends.
