Recuerdos

Don't try to copy. Stick to the call of your heart, work, work hard, become and remain self-critical.

René Groebli was born on October 9, 1927, in Zurich, Switzerland, and became one of the twentieth century's most innovative and experimental photographers. Across more than seventy years of artistic practice, he moved restlessly between documentary impulse and poetic expression, always drawn by his own words to "the call of your heart." His passion for photography was ignited in 1943 when his father brought home a Rolleiflex camera. The teenage Groebli did not simply point and shoot — he ran systematic tests, studying photographic principles with a rigor that would define everything he made. He apprenticed with photographer Theo Vornow in 1944, then studied under the celebrated Hans Finsler at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. Yet Finsler's cool, objective doctrine chafed against Groebli's fascination with movement and feeling, and he left to train briefly as a documentary cameraman before committing fully to photography. At just 22, he self-financed and published "Magie der Schiene" (Rail Magic, 1949), a photographic essay of a night train journey from Paris to Basel, rendered in deliberately blurred, smoke-wreathed images. The public initially rejected it; history would later recognize it as a milestone in international photobook culture and a harbinger of the Subjektive Fotografie movement. His most celebrated work came during a belated honeymoon in Paris in 1952, when he photographed intimate scenes of his wife, Rita, in their modest Montparnasse hotel room. Published in 1954, "Das Auge der Liebe" (The Eye of Love) was dismissed as indecent upon release, yet ultimately established his international reputation and is now considered a landmark of the photobook form. Edward Steichen acquired his work for MoMA and invited him into the landmark "Family of Man" exhibition in 1955, alongside fellow Swiss photographers Werner Bischof, Robert Frank, and Gotthard Schuh. In the mid-1950s, Groebli pivoted to commercial photography, opening his Zurich studio and pioneering dye-transfer color printing and color alienation techniques — earning the title "Master of Color" from the American Color Annual in 1957. After closing his studio in 1981 and relocating to Provence, he rediscovered black-and-white work, producing personal series from New York, Ireland, and the South of France. A retrospective at the Kunsthaus Zurich in 1999 reintroduced him to a new generation. In 2026, his Eye of Love series inspired designer Sarah Burton's Givenchy Spring/Summer collection — a tribute arriving as he approached his final days. René Groebli passed away on June 5, 2026, at the age of 98. Known for his gently playful charm and an unmistakable presence consistently expressed in color and light, he left behind an œuvre that permanently shaped Swiss and international photography.

I first met René in his late 1980s and was immediately struck by how much life still emanated from him. He was charming, thoughtful, and kind, with a quiet presence that drew you in. There was a gentleness and understanding in his eyes that felt inseparable from the photographs he made.
