Quey Tsu Tsay, 蔡貴智
May 28th, 1943 - November 22nd, 2022
May 28th, 1943 - November 22nd, 2022
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Granddaughter Sarah's report about her grandfather, written when she was in 6th grade:
"Quey Tsu Tsay was born in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan on May 28, 1943. He had a loving mom and dad who taught good manners to him, his three brothers, and two sisters. His mom was loving and capable, she helped in his dad's business and took care of her kids. Quey's chores were cleaning up rooms, helping to take care of his younger siblings, and running errands.
Quey did not have any toys, but he played with tadpoles, giant red ants, dragonflies, moths, marbles and crickets.
His pets were silkworms and his favorite food was popsicles. His mom and dad were very important to him as a child. One of the stories he remmebers as a child is The Monkey King.
In Quey's teenage years, his favorite subjects were biology and chemistry. He did fun things like making movies by drawing many pictures on a strip of paper and pulling it through a frame. He also bought candy and sold it to his friends for more than he paid for it. He also served in the army for one year, as required for all Taiwanese young men. His first job was being a teaching assistant after he finished military service in Taiwan. One of Quey's favorite memories was when his grandfather brought him a harmonica after a business trip to Japan.
Quey Tsu Tsay met Wu-Mei Kuo in Taipei, Taiwan. Three days after getting married, they moved from Taiwan to Utah. Later they moved to New York, Ohio, New Jersey and California. They lived in nine places during their marriage.
Quey thought these ideas are important in raising kids: love them, set guidelines for them, be gentle, be loving and be considerate. His life was blessed.
Quey was the only parent who worked outside of home, but his wife worked hard to take care of the family. For his job, he did research for making fiberglass. He worked from 8am to 5pm and enjoyed his job. When he was not at work, he played sports, traveled, listened to classical music, read and took pictures.
His major life accomplishments are: patenting his company's fiberglass, using computer simulation to make fiberglass, having two great daughters, three great granddaughters, and helping other people. He overcame challenges in life through his faith in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ. His challenges in life helped him learn the meaning of life and taught him to build strength and peace of mind and to enjoy his abundant life."
Additional notes from the family:
Quey is survived by his wife Wu-Mei, daughters Shirley and Anna, sons-in-law William and Ted, granddaughters Sarah, Sofie, and Joanna, and five siblings:
Ching-Rong, Shu-Huey, I-Pin, Meei-Huey, and Tien-Hsiang.

I learned of Dr. Tsay's death two days ago and would like to pay my tribute to the kind and generous human being I had the honor and privilege of knowing. He was a mentor, a colleague, and a friend to me. I was doing my MS in Chemical Engineering when Quey was doing his PhD at SUNY Buffalo. Quey joined Owens Corning in 1976 and in the same year I went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to do my PhD. I joined Owens Corning in 1982 and became part of Quey's group. He was my mentor and helped me enormously. From 1982 till Quey's retirement from Owens Corning in 1997, we were colleagues and worked on numerous projects. We visited several manufacturing plants in the US and abroad. I have many fond memories of our association. Quey was one of the kindest and most gentle human beings I have ever met. I am grateful to him for his friendship and to God that I had the honor of knowing and working with him. I send me belated condolences to the Tsay family and wish them the very best.

My father-in-law, Quey Tsu Tsay, was a super-cool, fun-loving guy. In the very brief period since I met him when first dating Anna in 2003, I have observed how he loved the Lord with all his heart, soul, and mind and how he loved and took care of his family. His sense of humor kept the family loose with his witty jokes and at the same time encouraged us to draw near to the Lord with prayer and Bible lessons. I loved his knack for taking good pictures. When I came over to Shirley and William's house to meet my eventual in laws, what I thought was just a casual get together for some violin playing with Anna turned into a mini-photoshoot by Quey. He enjoyed playing tennis and ping-pong. We would battle each other at the "Fremont Open" as he calls it in our tennis matches. My father-in-law had a spiritual influence in the community he served. As an elder in his church, he taught Bible lessons that drew people to get to know God more in a relationship. There are too many wonderful memories to write about, but I will always take to heart how he led his family as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is missed dearly.

Thank you to the Tsay family for a wonderful memorial service. I could tell from my interactions with Elder Tsay that he was an outstanding person, but when I heard everyone's testimonials at the memorial service, he was even more excellent than I had thought. I came away inspired and a little bit discouraged because there's so much more I need to do to become as awesome as Elder Tsay someday. I would love to become as positive, industrious at home, and not get angry or raise my voice. I was encouraged yesterday at the church I currently attend that I need God to help me with my unbelief. I can start by asking God to help me be more thankful and to fast complaining. And also continue working on my own issues. During the memorial service when his family was playing his favorite hymns on the piano and stringed instruments, I could imagine him in heaven, proudly showing everyone his talented family. I also realized there are so many people at IPCF that are so wonderful and excellent in their own ways. I hope I can appreciate people more whenever I see them especially as we all get older. Thank you, Tsay family, for being an awesome example.
