September 26th, 1950 - May 12th, 2025
A quiet strength, a brilliant mind, and a heart for his family.
Oscar James Sr., beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on May 12, 2025, in Houston, Texas. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 26, 1950, the first of a set of identical twins to Edgar Brock and Clementine James.
Oscar lived a life defined by discipline, quiet strength, and enduring love for his family. A proud veteran, he served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and earned the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) and the MKM M-16 marksmanship decoration. After his military service, he pursued his education and earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Southern University.
In 1980, he married Carolyn James and together they raised three children—Simara, Sedrick, and Oscar Jr.—instilling in them his values of resilience, excellence, and authenticity. Oscar was both enterprising and hardworking, founding a successful landscaping business before joining Reliant Energy, where he remained until his retirement. Even in his later years, he enjoyed roles in hospitality, bringing warmth and care to all those he met.
Affectionately known as “the best grandpa in the world,” Oscar cherished his time with his grandchildren, Elisa Veramolina and Ethan Moore, who brought him immense pride and joy. His love extended to the plants he nurtured in his home—most memorably his signature climbing ivy plants—and his hobbies like chess, pool, and DIY projects that turned houses into homes. From building a backyard basketball court to crafting a patio, his handiwork and presence remain etched into the spaces he loved.
Oscar’s legacy is one of excellence, organization, and generosity. He never missed a birthday card, a call when needed, or a chance to give from the heart. He had exceptional taste and an unmatched eye for detail. Though he faced many challenges, he met them all with tenacity and a deep sense of purpose—always reaching for the best and making sure his children were equipped to do the same.
He is survived by his children Simara James, Sedrick James, and Oscar James Jr.; his grandchildren Elisa Veramolina and Ethan Moore; and his siblings , Edith Brock Griffin, Roy Brock, Marjorie James Barre', Clyde Brock, and Stanley James. He now rests peacefully with his twin brother Arthur James and his sisters Clementine Fortenberry and Johnnysteen Fortenberry.
Oscar’s life was a testament to quiet leadership and unwavering love. His family will continue to honor him by striving for excellence and carrying forward his legacy of strength and resilience.
