Growing up, Uncle Mitch “hired” me to pick rocks in his field. I walked up and down the field finding large rocks and picking them off the ground and into a bucket to make it easier to work the land. We took a break and he took me to Merrill’s Corner for a soda and some lunch (I think probably Jo-Jo’s). I felt so special because getting a soda and snack at the corner was not something we ever did. He was so fun and funny. I was also very proud to be able to tell friends that my Uncle drove a Zamboni. 😊 Coolest job. I will never forget Uncle Mitch for his goodness at my Dad’s funeral, how he helped dig Dad’s grave and then he filled it in with Josh on their own. That was so touching to see his love in that way and I am grateful for his example of quiet goodness.

Michael Perry

Always thought that I would see my friend again, just had hoped it would be on this side of the veil. I was led to Mitch by the spirit, meeting with him and his companion in the home of the Weaver’s after a long and sometimes torturous path to the truth. Of course, I could not have known at that time, that I was actually in the home of his future in-laws. Mitch, his companion and I sat down to discuss what I knew of the Church, and an hour and a half later, deemed me ready for baptism. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. A muggy August night, standing on the lake’s edge as the thunderheads gathered and heat lightning flashed. Mitch being Mitch said, “Wow, how cool…if you’re hit by lightning you could go to heaven as one of the most pure people.” I, however, did not think that was such a great idea.. I found my friend on Facebook, and thus reconnected with a man I had come to love like a brother. Great man, a great father…and most of his stories too hard to believe. He used to give me all kinds of grief about my Ohio State Buckeyes, but I knew deep down, he loved Ohio, after all, the love of his life was one of Ohio’s daughters. There is indeed a Bigfoot sized hole in the world today, and I can’t wait to see you on the other side.

Heather Bybee

It is hard to describe just how much the Bybee family loves and appreciates Mitch. He has been a regular visitor at our house for the past seven years. Most of the memories I have of him are seated on our couch sharing all kinds of random stories and lots of laughter. He sat with Josh so many times as a friend and a non-judgemental sounding board. They worked at the temple together (redoing electrical stuff in the ladies' dressing room), created all kinds of wood projects in the shop, and scavenged for logs and other cool wood all over the region. The both got a ticket the day a cop pulled them over for not wearing seatbelts. (Anxiety and claustrophobia prevented them from being buckled that day, but at least they were together!) Mitch came to our rescue many times. No hesitation or questions. He regularly checked in to see how we were doing. Mitch gave Hailey a bunch of Roman coins and a book with which to decipher them. She spent hours with them, and totally fed her history and discovery-loving heart. He also had big hugs for Lily and a patient listening ear whenever he was here. He shared The Hu with me so I could share them with my students. Josh's ringtone for Mitch's number is Ozzy Osborne (and the kids all recognize the song whenever they hear it on the radio). We miss Mitch. We miss seeing the Red Rocket in the driveway. We miss his laugh and his stories and his goodness. We look forward to seeing him again some day---whole and happy and totally accepting.

I don’t have the words to convey how deeply sorry I am for your family’s loss, but also how happy I am that Mitch isn’t suffering any longer or contained to a wheel chair and his bed when I know he’d rather be working, hiking, and playing. I will always have great memories of Mitch as an awesome next door neighbor for almost 25 years, great friend, fun hiking partner, incredible father, and all around wonderful man. I can’t tell you how comforting it was knowing that one of the kindest, most caring and dependable men on earth lived just down the road from me. Whether it was hiking Mount St Helens together or him dragging me up McBee Hill (really more of a cliff) or the time he had to raise an LA Rams flag over his house because he lost a bet to me, I will hold many memories of my friend Mitch in my heart until we see each other again.
