Recuerdos

Maura Ann D'Antoni Hawkins, affectionately known as Sugar, peacefully passed away at her home in Moorpark, Calif., on Jan. 19, 2024. She was 88.

Born Oct. 10, 1935 in New Orleans, La., to Dr. Joseph S. and Helen Skelly D'Antoni, Maura was the oldest of three children. She graduated from the McGehee School in 1953 as class president and remained a proud and active alumna throughout her life. After attending Tulane's Newcomb College, she married Harold D. Hawkins of Shreveport, La. on June 2, 1954. Together they moved from New Orleans, La. to the Washington, D.C., metro area where they raised their five children. They later returned to New Orleans where she helped manage Harold's successful company, Alpro Acoustics, and ran her own event planning business, Logistics of New Orleans.

Maura was a people person with a unique force of gravity; those close to her felt lucky to be in her orbit. She took a genuine interest in nearly everyone she came across, asking not only their name but details about their lives, families and aspirations. Her phone calls were notoriously long, but she had a knack for recalling precise details during subsequent interactions. Many people have expressed their deep appreciation for her guidance, influence, warmth and understanding.

She was preceded in death by husband Harold and son Jerry. She is survived by two brothers (Joseph Jr. and Patrick), four children (Mary Diane, Bryan, Kelly and Helen), nine grandchildren (Bradley, Emily, Kyle, Bear, Wade, Maddie, Anselm, Marielle and Brady), five great-grandchildren (Tori, Carey, Elliott, Dot and James) and numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Maura often did things her own way, including her choice not to have a funeral service. Her ashes will be interred at the Hawkins family plot in Hosston, La. at an unspecified future date.

Though Maura is no longer with us physically, her influence and powerful presence will live on. Below is a poem found in her papers; consider it a lagniappe:

"God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be / So he put his arms around you and whispered, "Come to me." / With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away, / And though we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. / A golden heart stopped beating, a precious soul at rest. / God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best."

Maura and I became friends in first grade. Every summer until fifth grade (when I changed schools) I spent a few weeks each summer at Maura Manor with her wonderful family. As I am an only child, it was heaven for me. This is a photo from that time. I am next to Maura. My family moved to Long Island, NY when I was 13 and we lost touch for over 30 years. Yet when we renewed contact it was as if no time had passed……she was that warm of a person. In recent years we would see one another whenever she came to N.O. She will be greatly missed.

It is hard to believe that Maura is no longer with us! I met Maura in the 60’s when I was teaching at St. James in Falls Church, VA. Mary was the age for first communion and I was the teacher that helped prepare her for that and pushed to have it happen and Maura was forever grateful. We became friends. Frank and I were even invited to her son’s naval wedding at which I remember her being exact about the dinner, which was excellent! When I was living in PA near where Mary was staying, my husband and I took Mary out for dinners and lunch and was her local contact for company. Sowe were in tou h with Maura a lot then. .The last time I saw Maura was when she came to California where we were living at the time and stayed with us for a few days en route to a conference in Reno. It was a lovely visit, and I always enjoyed having conversations with her. Maura’s memory was exceptional She always amazed me. It was always delightful to go down memory lane with her and to catch up with the present as well! . We kept in touch for 55 years through all the ups and downs of both our lives. I will miss her. I wish I had visited with her one more time . Rest in peace, Maura. Cheers! Much Love to the family!

Maura was a dear friend of my mother, Betsy, from high school (maybe earlier). I feel blessed to have gotten to know her, mostly in the last 15 years or so after we met up with her during a family trip to Portland. Since then, I was fortunate to be on her email list for updates and philosophical discussions on a range of topics from parenting to careers to what is the best po boy in New Orleans (which we did not settle!). I will miss those emails. Most importantly, she took a deep interest in my life – my wife, children, career, and every other aspect of life. It is a true blessing when an older adult who is not your parent takes an interest in your life. Sugar was one of those blessings to me. I will miss her!

Our relationship is one of the dearest in my life and will always be. It is hard to put into words, but I will always be grateful that fate brought us together and I am a better person for that. I am glad have had her for so long as my mother in law and after the title no longer applied, our love lived on., as love needs no titles.

What do you say about someone who has been your dear friend for 75 years? She was funny, she was loving, she was kind. All those things. She was our McGehee class president in 1953, but she ran the class forever after that. She arranged reunions, planned luncheons, even when she couldn't come herself! Even if she said she only had a few minutes, you knew the conversation would last for hours! I'm sure she will talk the arm off of St.Peter and find a way to meet St. Patrick! And I hope she'll find lots of creole tomatoes! I'll certainly miss her!
