Mark Koepke

19 de marzo de 1957 - 27 de noviembre de 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mark Arthur Koepke, who died suddenly on November 27, 2023. Mark was funny, loving, caring, and most of all, kind. He brought joy and laughter to everyone he knew, whether by sharing a joke, giving a smile, building a fairy house, or forwarding a meme.
Mark was born in Stevens Point, WI on March 19, 1957. He was raised in Appleton, WI, attended Appleton East High School, and then UW-Stevens Point where he received Masters Degree in Teaching, and UW-Superior for his Masters Degree in Art History. His passion for travel began with his semesters abroad both as a student, and later, as a trip leader. For over thirty years, he worked for International Programs at UWSP, helping to provide opportunities for students to broaden horizons and build community around the world.
An avid cyclist and skier, Mark was typically out on a ride or puttering around working on his bikes at home. Beginning in 1985, he led trips abroad for cyclists, hikers, and other adventure seekers. He was always excited to explore new places, reminisce on his visits to his favorite destinations, or hit the backroads of Wisconsin again with his closest friends.
Mark took immense pride and joy in being a parent and grandparent. He is survived by his children, Brigitte Koepke Smith (Sam Smith) and Tristan Koepke (Zachary DeWitt), grandchildren Florence Geneva Smith, Peter Arlo Smith, and Samson Ole Smith, former spouse Sarah Foster, step-children Henry Stillwell and Olivia Stillwell, former spouse Kim O’Flaherty, sisters Tori Schroeder (Mike Schroeder) and Kim Koepke, nieces Emma Schroeder (Alexa Olgren) and Megan Stafford, and nephew Noah Stafford, and a large extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Orville Koepke and Marjorie Koepke. His humor and laughter will be profoundly missed by his family and community of friends. His love was boundless, and his playful spirit will always be remembered.
Mark’s life changed immensely when he suffered a stroke in 2015. In the last eight years, he overcame so much in learning to manage his health and gaining independence. He took pride in his volunteer services in a stroke-survivor support group. He inspired many, was passionate about living his life to the fullest, and encouraging others to do so as well. May we find comfort in the cherished memories that will forever reside in our hearts. A memorial service to honor and remember Mark will be held at a later date. For now, please share your warm thoughts and memories of Mark, and hold your loved ones close.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Office of International Education at UWSP in honor of Mark Koepke. This fund will continue to help make opportunities for student education abroad possible. ¿Cómo conociste a Mark?
I meet Mark on Facebook , where I posted many bicycle racing photos from the 1970s. Mark contacted me in early 2022 that he and Bob Anderson were coming out to Northern California in April to do some rides. We first meet in person in Petaluma CA. And rode on a cold wet day out to the coast, and exchanged many memories of past cycling adventures. Took a few photos of Mark in front the schoolhouse in Bodega, from the Hitchcock, movie Birds. Mark was very friendly and a good person to ride with. Sad to hear of his passing!

Mark was simply not able to pass a bike shop without going inside. Frankfurt, Germany (October 2013).

Mark was a capable bike mechanic, which, being a tour leader, often came in handy. He also needed those skills for his vintage bike restoration projects. During his many trips to Europe in the late 90s and in the 00s, for both UWSP ISP and Bicycling Tours, he was always on the search for small, old bike shops, where he hoped to find forgotten stuff in backrooms and attics. He would then ship these - what to me seemed - old and rusty metal objects (he used to call these bike parts ;-) to my place in the Netherlands, from where I shipped these on to the US. And, boy, those boxes were heavy. And when Mark needed a paint job done on one of his vintage bikes, I would help him out to reconstruct the original transfer decals by using my newly acquired illustrator and photoshop skills.
