Life has taken me full circle. I think it is time to return to the process I was given.

Lucien Smith was a force in American contemporary art — a multidisciplinary painter, community builder, and restless creative spirit whose life defied easy categorization. Born on April 15, 1989, in Los Angeles, to fashion designer Melissa Dizon Ramsey and artist-musician Terrence Sanders-Smith, Lucien grew up steeped in creativity. His childhood was nomadic, moving through more than a dozen schools across Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, and Louisiana before graduating from Santa Monica High School in 2007. When he received his acceptance call from the Cooper Union School of Art on April 1 of that year, he was certain it was an April Fools' Day joke. It was not. "I felt like I had gotten the golden ticket," he later said. At Cooper Union, Lucien earned his BFA in Fine Arts in 2011. His senior thesis exhibition, "Imagined Nostalgia," announced an artist determined to be noticed. A monumental painting of the tree from Winnie the Pooh — works he described as "objects from a childhood that I never experienced firsthand" — caught the eye of dealer Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn the day of the show. His ascent was immediate and vertiginous. The early 2010s brought Lucien international recognition for his Rain Paintings: large-scale abstractions made by discharging paint-filled fire extinguishers across unprimed canvas. The works were kinetic, uncontrolled, and impossible to fake. He was twice named to Forbes' "30 Under 30" list in Art and Style, his auction results reached $3.7 million in 2014 alone, and The New York Times called him a "wunderkind." Yet the speed of it all left marks. "Art was about money everywhere I looked," he admitted. "I was pushed into being an artist so fast that I didn't have the chance to look at what I was doing." By 2015, Lucien had walked away from the commercial gallery system and moved to Montauk on Long Island with his mother and younger brother, seeking what he called "a more honest approach to making art." That retreat became a second act richer than his first. He founded the nonprofit Serving the People to champion emerging and unsigned artists. He co-founded the sustainable fashion brand Vivien Ramsay with his mother. He pioneered NFT collections through Lobus and presented his first solo institutional exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum in 2020. In 2025, he revived the legendary artist-run restaurant FOOD in Manhattan's Chinatown — not as nostalgia, but as living community art. "I am making art," he said. "It just happens to look and feel like a restaurant." In August 2026, Lucien returned to his Rain Paintings technique at Camp Hero in Montauk, completing a final series titled "Delay of Game." He died in New York City on September 8, 2026, at age 37. He leaves behind a body of work, a community of artists he championed, and an approach to creative life that was always more about people than markets.

I will keep pushing forward with the trust he gave me to show this final gesture of his lifelong work.

When we met Lucien right after he graduated, in 2011, he was the hub and heart of a burgeoning downtown culture. Bright, tender, filled with ideas and experimentation—a rare artist with charisma, talent, and the ability to build community.

Lucien lives in a wordless place inside us now. When people remember contemporary art from the early teens of this century, it will be impossible not to include the work of Lucien Smith in that conversation. He was always seeking connection and I think that was maybe a survival mechanism for him. He will be missed terribly.
