March 10th, 1941 - April 4th, 2023
Louis A. Belmont, 82, passed away on April 4, 2023 at his home in Albuquerque after an extended illness. He grew up in El Paso, Texas and served four years in the US Air Force. He earned a degree in journalism from the University of Texas at El Paso and was editor of the UTEP Prospector. Lou found his professional calling in public relations and human resources, most notably serving 20 years with Mountain Bell (subsequently US West). After retiring in 1997, he worked part-time for the Albuquerque Journal as an editorial assistant. Lou devoted his time to the community, including nearly 20 years on the board of directors of the Girl Scouts of New Mexico. Friends will also remember his fondness for classic cars. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kay (née Tanner), his daughter Linda Johnson, son-in-law Carl Willis, and three granddaughters–Wren, Pippin, and Sonnet. The family welcomes remembrances at https://www.mykeeper.com/profile/LouisBelmont/ In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the name of Louis Belmont are kindly encouraged (http://giftfunds.stjude.org/Louis_Belmont).

I was saddened to learn of Lou’s passing. I worked in the PR Department at Mountain Bell/USWest and got to know Lou. He tried to teach me how to write a press release, but I wasn’t a very good writer. Lou helped me out while I was a single mom of two daughters. My car had broken down and he sold me one he was getting rid of—one of the best cars I ever owned. I got married the year I left Mountain Bell/US West and Lou was the photographer at our wedding. Rest well, Lou. My prayers to Kay and Linda.

When I was a student intern at what was then U S WEST in the mid-1980s, Lou Belmont helped me understand the Bell System's long and proud traditions, its culture and, especially, how they were changing at that very moment in time (divestiture). He mentored me without me knowing that I was being mentored. I am forever grateful.

Lou was a colleague and great friend for more than 40 years. One of the things I appreciated most about Lou was that he was a great connector of people. Once most of our old U S WEST bunch retired or moved on, he often took the lead in bringing groups of us together to reminisce about "the good ol' days." Lou didn't like to talk about himself much, often deflecting questions about his health with his sharp wit. I miss him. God bless Kay, Linda and the rest of Lou's family and may he rest in peace.

Lou was one of the first to welcome me into the Mountain Bell "family." He was in HR when I joined the PR team, but out of curiousity and friendliness, he was like the unofficial greeter to newbies like me. Later, when he joined our team, I found him to be fun and funny, a mischievous jokester who took me under his wing like a kid sister and played matchmaker, for which I'm forever grateful since my husband and I are celebrating 33 years together this year. I will miss his kind spirit, our dinners with his wife Kay and him and his banter on the beauty of classic cars with my husband. My condolences to Kay and Linda. Lou will be missed.

Lou Belmont and I worked together at US West in Albuquerque, NM for several years. He was in PR and I was in Public Affairs, so we interacted frequently. One of my favorite memories of Lou was the fact that he would organize informal meetings after work at the Elk's Club. He took pleasure in getting people together and prompting exciting discussions (fueled, I'm sure by the 50 cent special for adult libations). He loved to stir things up and it was great fun and something his old boss, John Aragon and I looked forward to. May he rest in peace. Bill Garcia
