I'm not going to be bothered, I'm just going to be LeRoy Irvin.

LeRoy Irvin Jr. was born on September 15, 1957, in Fort Dix, New Jersey — the son of a military family whose discipline and competitive fire would one day make him one of the most electrifying defensive backs the NFL had ever seen. With his infectious smile, cool demeanor, and what teammates would simply call "the corner attitude," LeRoy had a gift for making the extraordinary look effortless. After honing his skills at Glenn Hills High School, Irvin went on to the University of Kansas, where he developed into a playmaker who could change a game in an instant. His talent was undeniable, and in 1980 the Los Angeles Rams selected him in the third round — 70th overall — of the NFL Draft. What followed was one of the most decorated careers in Rams franchise history. Over nine seasons in Los Angeles, Irvin became the heartbeat of a defense that opponents feared. He earned three First-Team All-Pro honors (1981, 1982, and 1986), a Second-Team All-Pro nod in 1985, and back-to-back Pro Bowl selections in 1985 and 1986. Remarkably, he was named All-Pro at two entirely different positions — cornerback and punt returner — a distinction shared by only a handful of players in league history. On October 11, 1981, facing the Atlanta Falcons, Irvin authored a moment that still stands alone in the NFL record books: 207 punt return yards in a single game. The record has never been broken. He called himself the "Iceman," and on days like that, it showed. He finished his Rams career with 34 interceptions — third-most in franchise history — and five pick-sixes, tied for the most in team history. He closed out his 11-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions in 1990. After hanging up his cleats, LeRoy gave back to the game as an assistant football coach at California State University, Northridge in 1992, where he was remembered as much for the life lessons he passed on as for any technical coaching. He later channeled that same entrepreneurial spirit into business, partnering with former teammate Vince Ferragamo at End Zone Mortgage and co-founding Original Mini's Inc. alongside Eric Dickerson, Larry Westbrook, and Mike Hope — a licensed NFL memorabilia company that kept him close to the game he loved. LeRoy Irvin Jr. passed away on August 1, 2026, in Anaheim Hills, California, after a battle with throat cancer. He was 68. He is survived by his four children: Leroy III, Charles, Sarah, and Julius. He leaves behind a legacy not just of record books and All-Pro honors, but of kindness, generosity, and the kind of warmth that made everyone around him feel a little more alive.

Leroy was a great friend and human being. An NFL Pro Bowl Defensive Back who enjoyed passing on his experiences and knowledge to many athletes, he found joy in teaching the position he played at the highest level.

Leroy wasn't just a lockdown corner and a fierce competitor on the field; he was a true friend and a great man who always brought incredible energy.

He had an attitude, he had the corner attitude that you need, like, 'I don't care what you thought of me, I'm not going to be bothered, I'm just going to be LeRoy Irvin.' I loved that about LeRoy.

I don't think people realize what a great player LeRoy was, because the media was not as big as it is right now.
