Barnsley has been my life.

Laurence Barry Murphy — known to everyone in football simply as "Spud" — was one of the most beloved figures ever to pull on a red shirt at Oakwell. Born on 10 February 1940 in Consett, County Durham, he grew up with a single ambition: to become a professional footballer. In 1962, Barnsley Football Club gave him that chance, signing him from South Shields, and what followed was a partnership between man and club that would endure for the rest of his life. Murphy made his debut that year in a match against Halifax and quickly established himself as a resolute, dependable presence at right-back. Over the next sixteen years he never left. He helped the Reds win promotion from the Fourth Division in 1968 and, in October 1965, wrote himself into the club's history books as the first Barnsley player ever to be used as a substitute, coming on against Doncaster Rovers. His consistency was the stuff of legend: he assembled a remarkable run of 182 consecutive league and cup appearances, and by the time he made his final appearance in April 1978 against Torquay United — at the age of 38 — he had accumulated 569 league appearances, a club record that has never been broken. In November 1975, still playing at 35, Murphy was appointed player-coach under manager Jim Iley. He embraced the dual role with characteristic enthusiasm, returning to his favoured right-back position and remaining an ever-present during the 1976–77 season. After retiring as a player he joined Allan Clarke's coaching staff at Barnsley, and when Clarke took over at Leeds United in October 1980, Murphy followed him to Elland Road, where he coached until 1984. Beyond his playing records, what set Murphy apart was his boundless warmth. Described by those who knew him as the most positive, upbeat person at the club, he spent decades after his playing days as a Barnsley ambassador — leading stadium tours, hosting matchday hospitality, organising charity events, and visiting fans in hospital. He called Barnsley "my life," and the club felt the same way about him. In 2018 he was inducted into Barnsley's inaugural Hall of Fame, and in April 2022, Oakwell's North Stand was renamed the Barry Murphy Stand in his honour. Laurence Barry Murphy passed away on 24 October 2026, aged 86. He leaves behind not just a record that may stand forever, but a legacy of grace, loyalty, and love for the game that touched every supporter who was lucky enough to know him. Once a Red, always a Red.

He is quite possibly the most positive, upbeat person I have met during my time at Barnsley and his legacy here is indelible.

Even as a young fan, I was lucky enough to meet Barry a few times while also being told about him as a player by my grandad. A player who will forever be a part of our history, RIP Barry.

As we recognise our alumni on this special day, it is fitting that we pay tribute to arguably our most legendary player – a man who has represented this great club more than anyone else, and who continues to remain such an important part of the matchday experience here at Oakwell.

What a true legend. To have the best away end in the EFL named after you still didn't do him justice... Rest easy Barry.
