The 3rd Millennium The poet pushed his long robe behind him before joining the circle of men around the fire. The men were talking about battle and war and what they learned about it today. He stringed his finger across his lyre and they all stopped talking to look at him. He said to them, “I know what I know.” There is a poem that none of you have heard. When the western world went into the 3rd millennium most of us paid no attention. But there were some academics who pointed out what the Maya, masters of calendars have predictions, have said, that the Western World would end in the year 2013, but it turned out not that the world would end, or as any many people thought, but just that the western world started its ending in that year. When they entered the 3rd Millennium, we took with us much history from the 1st and 2 millenniums. Such as, from mid evil times where it included royalty and from Mayan times which included Mayan royalty and Mayan City States which had been seized during war, and also included Belize, Costa Rica and also from the handling guards of Babylon, which were filled with beautiful and fragrant flowers. It included history of French queens and one of them who had been taken to England and married the king, and history of English kings, and even French kings, and history of the Sumerians, who were the first people who wrote, and we had copies of every bill and every receipt. There were professors and their grad students who studied the Maya and who had studied their ancestors who descended from Mayan pyramids. It told the history of Mesopotamia thousands of years before. The fighting went on for two days and we have won. The other side thought they had won but they never agreed on anything. The men sat cross legged around the fire and talked about warriors they have fought and women they have loved. They all ate all they could, but the war was over. By Julia Casey (2017)
