Loved Ones

On August 18th, 2023, Joseph (Joe) Notarnicola, 81, passed away peacefully in Richmond, Virginia. He was blessed with a loving family who surrounded him during his passage. Joe is remembered for a well-lived life, and treasured for his resilience and wisdom. He never met a stranger, cared deeply for his country and the world, and taught acceptance and forgiveness by example. The eldest child of Frank Notarnicola and Gloria (Cafaro),. Joe grew up in the Bronx, NY. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed basketball, bowling, and stickball, earning a reputation as a “3 sewer hitter.” He was an avid golfer and played frequently with his brother Jim, whom he loved with his whole heart. He was a devoted student of history and politics, dedicating many hours to reading and engaging in lively debates. He often told stories of fond memories with his grandparents as well as his many aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom lived nearby and rarely missed a Sunday dinner together. Following a tradition set by his many uncles, Joe joined the US Navy at age 17. A Cold War Era veteran, he served as a Hospital Corpsman 1st Class, and was stationed at Washington Navy Yard where he served on the USS Sequoia. After his honorable discharge, Joe had a long and successful career with 7-Eleven, Inc. In a testament to his extraordinary work ethic, he worked his way up from part-time store clerk to Zone Manager, eventually becoming Director of Minority & Economic Development. Joe passionately advocated for equal opportunity for all both at work and in his personal life. Joe retired on the Eastern shore of Maryland before moving to his Fredericksburg, Virginia horse farm, Hidden Creek with his well loved dogs and cats. He spent the remaining years of his life in the wonderful care of the Sitter & Barfoot Veteran’s Care Center in Richmond, VA, where he was recently elected President of the community Resident’s Council. Joe is survived by his children, Janice Notarnicola Smith and Joseph (Joe) Notarnicola; their mother, Pamela Gallant Eborn; and granddaughters Emmalia Foster Notarnicola and Regina Maria Scannapieco. He is also survived by his brother,James Notarnicola and wife Kathleen; their two children Marisa M. Wright and Christopher (Aubrey) Notarnicola; grandson Owen Wright; and sister Patricia A. (Testa) Mickelinc; and her sons John and James Mickelinc. Arrangements for services are pending. Donations may be made in his name to Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Facility in Richmond VA, or your local ASPCA.

Joe, Was as gentle, compassionate, friendly, caring, understanding and loving as any person I have ever met. He touched the heart and soul of everyone he came in contact with. His life was filled with love from those he loved and all those who loved him! Even after his accident he never turned the light off inside himself! It's something that was put there that was much too special to let anything dim! The world was a better place because Joe was in it. We should all be grateful for knowing Joe and the fact that he made everyone he touched want to be a better person by being more like him. When it came to character he was for sure the GOAT! He will be remembered fondly by all he came into contact with. Heaven has an angel that will spread his wings with peace, love and understanding. We can pay tribute to Joe by all trying to be more like him and thus making this a better place to live! Rest in Peace Joe! You will be missed but never forgotten!

I met Joe when he was at Sitter and Barfoot and had the pleasure to care for him on a daily basis. He was such a nice man. He was so happy when he got elected President of the Residents council and really wanted to make things better for everyone, residents and staff alike. I am blessed to have known him and will miss him greatly. My condolences to his family.

I only met Joe a few times when our paths crossed at 7-Eleven. Even though these encounters were brief, it was obvious that Joe was a really nice guy. My condolences to his family and friends

A fine legacy to our extended family. I remember looking up to him as a small child from both my parents admiration of him; and at family gatherings. I always considered him to be my cousin too; happy to see him at my parents 50th Anniversary party, unfortunately the last time I saw him.. he is in amazing company now. The family loss is never lost. ❤️
