It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of one of our beloved trustees and Chairman at AVOW, John Leece-Jones or John Leece as he was affectionately known. He passed away doing something he loved, volunteering in his community on behalf of AVOW. We will forever be grateful for his dedication to us, our values, and the wider community of Wrexham.
John has been a trustee of AVOW since March 2011, during which time he has been Company Secretary, Chair of most committees, and AVOW Executive Chairman. He has guided the organisation through many developments going back to the days of Communities First. He always showed personal pride in the work of AVOW and always wanted to hear about the work we do in our community.
John has been a tremendous asset to AVOW and he will be sadly missed by all the staff, trustees, and many organisations he supported, who knew him in various roles. How knowledge extended way beyond AVOW, bringing this to all of the voluntary roles he has undertaken. Throughout his time and devotion to AVOW he always offered a cheery smile at Ty AVOW and took many opportunities to sing the praises of trustees, staff, and volunteers.
John was a local lad, educated at Grove Park School for Boys, Wrexham and Manchester University, where he gained a Law degree.
John Leece was a gentleman from the 'old school', warm hearted and much loved by all for his kindness, consideration and supportive nature. He also embraced technology, as demonstrated with his much-used iPad and knowledge, his willingness to accept Zoom as the new 'norm'.
John entered public service with Wrexham Rural District Council and then, following Local Government reorganisation in 1974, he was appointed Principle LEgal Officer with the new Wrexham Maelor Borough Council. John later moved into private legal practice with a family firm of local solicitors.
John was also a Governor of Coleg Cambria, Chair of Tanyfron CP, Governor of Rofft, Trustee of Maes-y-Pant and Wrexham League of Friens. AS well as informal link swith numerous other third Sector organisations over the year including Chairman of Wrexham CAB, Gresford Community Council, Gresford Trust and TCC with their work on Town of Sanctuayr. Previously he served for several years as a Non-Executive Director of the North East Wales Health Boar, Midwifery Council and other national appointments.
John Leece's devotion to public service was an example for all in the Third SEctor and for public life in Wrexham. He will be fondly remembered for his valuable contribution to Wrexham and the wider community.
John Leece is survivred by his wife Sali and son John (Jnr). Our condolences go to his family and friends at this very difficult time.
AVOW ask that any memorials, memories, or tributes be posted to this page and will be passed on to the family.
