John Donetz

1954 - July 16th, 2022
It is with great sadness we are announcing the death John Donetz. He passed away at his beloved cabin on July 16, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marni Donetz and his three kids Xan, Kate and Jane. In addition, he leaves behind his brother Neil, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Marni and John met in 1974 at Charleswood Riding Club and have been together ever since. He lived a life full of music, laughter and most of all love. He was an exceptional biologist with a passion for fish and water. He loved to visit aquariums and see all the different species.

Dearest Marni, Xan, Kate and Jane...We're still numb and still recalling our Wednesday night drinks at the Forks with Marni and John 2 weeks ago. We will also cherish spending a few hours with all of you in your backyard just a week ago. We have so many memories from so far back. Apple River, Sugar Hills (thermoman) and helping design(?) and build your engineered cottage. We also can't help but remember the 'slightly used' tent trailer that we bought from you. I also just remembered that John gave me a guitar in exchange for a little engineering work that I did for him 40 years ago...and I still have that guitar. That made me want to post this picture from last August that was taken at their cottage when we were passing through on our 40th anniversary trip. John played guitar at our wedding!! So many memories...so many good times. Even though we only managed to cross paths every year or so since we moved away from Winnipeg 40 years ago...we will now have a hole in our heart every time we think of Winnipeg. Another example of sunny days shared with John and family at lake. Many a birthday was celebrated at the cottage. We’ll miss you John.

So very sad to hear of John’s passing. I worked with John for a few years and in that time he taught me a lot about consulting and always with a smile. He was one of those people that was easy to relate to with an easy going nature that helped the days troubles seem smaller.

John I attended Stony Mountain Elementary, Stonewall Colligiate and U of Manitoba together. He always had a story or yarn to spill. He was a gentle giant and a good friend to me in those early days. We lost touch after University as our lives unfolded. So sorry to here of his loss. Condolences to his wife and family.

Condolences to Marni, Xan, Kate and Jane on John’s sudden passing. Many a summer day was shared with John and the Donetz clan at the Lake. Simple pleasures of island picnics, dock gatherings and Thanksgiving dinner were shared with our kids and John never failed to entertain. No one can tell a story like John. John and the clan was part of our lake family for decades. Rest In Peace friend. Love Lynn, Tino, Steven and Andrew

John was a colleague and a friend. I learned so much from him and we had so many great conversations. He will truly be missed by the environmental consulting community.
