Jim Whittaker

October 22nd, 1929 - April 7th, 2026
You never conquer a mountain. You stand on the summit a few moments, then the wind blows your footsteps away.
Jim Whittaker was a man who lived at the edge of the possible — a mountaineer, conservationist, and business leader whose life became a testament to courage, humility, and an unshakeable love for the wild places of the earth. Born on October 22, 1929, he grew up with a restless spirit and a magnetic pull toward the mountains that would define his extraordinary journey.
On May 1, 1963, Whittaker etched his name into history when he became the first American to stand atop Mount Everest, the summit of the world. Reaching the peak alongside Sherpa Nawang Gombu as part of the American Everest Expedition, he planted an American flag at 29,032 feet and looked out across a horizon few human eyes had ever seen. It was a moment that captured a nation's imagination and cemented his legacy as one of the great adventurers of the twentieth century.
Yet Jim was never defined by a single summit. As CEO of REI — Recreational Equipment Inc. — he spent decades building one of America's largest and most beloved consumer cooperatives, turning it into a platform that invited millions of everyday Americans to discover the transformative power of the outdoors. His leadership was rooted in the same values that guided him on the mountain: integrity, teamwork, and an abiding respect for the natural world.
A close friend of the Kennedy family, Jim led the 1965 expedition to first ascend Mount Kennedy in the Yukon, honoring the memory of the late president. His memoir, A Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond, published in 1999, opened a window into a life lived with passion and purpose, inspiring a new generation of climbers and dreamers.
Throughout his life, Jim championed environmental conservation with the same intensity he brought to every mountain he faced. He believed the wilderness was not merely a place to conquer but a living inheritance to be protected and passed on.
Jim Whittaker passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 97. He leaves behind a legacy that stretches from the roof of the world to the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to look up at a mountain and dare to climb.
