Janet Hyer
March 19th, 1958 - June 9th, 2020
March 19th, 1958 - June 9th, 2020
It is with immeasurable sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Janet Hyer, on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 after a brave struggle with prolonged illness.
Janet received her BA and MA from Carleton University. Long after her Master’s thesis was completed, her supervisor, Carter Elwood, continued to praise the work. Janet came to the University of Toronto to pursue a PhD in political science, with a deep commitment to the subject of Bolshevik policy towards women in Russia. She defended her doctoral dissertation with distinction in 2007.
Early on Janet became involved with the Centre for Russian and East European Studies (now the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at the Munk School for Global Affairs & Public Policy.)
Janet was a vital force in the Munk School in its formative years, overseeing the communications portfolio for the then-Munk Centre for International Studies and serving for thirteen years as program officer for the Centre for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies. She could be found listening with rapt attention to lectures on a wide range of subjects, many of which she had been instrumental in arranging.
Janet brought her enormous integrity, professionalism, focus and attention to detail to everything she did, whether editing books and publications, managing a speaker series or publishing the Centre’s Newsletter. (Shaky grammar never failed to enrage her).
She was always willing to lend a hand with grace and what seemed like endless patience. Janet left an indelible impression of kindness on everyone who met her.
In addition to being a wonderful colleague, Janet had a razor-sharp wit. She had an ability to add insightful humour during stressful times, and without ever cracking a smile.
Janet relocated to the Research Office in the Faculty of Medicine in 2011, where she worked with faculty in the development of research grant proposals. She thrived on these new challenges and was highly regarded for her expertise.
We invite you to make a donation in Janet’s memory through the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies Fund (In Memoriam Donation link below). A fitting tribute will be created to continue Janet’s memory.

Janet and I became friends when we both attended Carelton and shared a grad student office in 1983 and 84. We had a mutual interest in the Russian Revolution and would spend many hours in lively procrastination debating some the more arcane, If not esoteric, aspects of the upheaval. We also used to get together on Tuesday evenings and head out to a bar that hosted an open stage "Blues Tues". Lot's of good times in comraderie. Janet was perhaps, the most genuine person I have ever met. Totally without pretense. Although I headed back out west in 1984, we managed to keep in touch on and off during the ensuing years. I raise my glass in Janet's memory.

Janet was a devoted Pilates student of mine. She was referred to me by the wonderful Mary Vachon. Janet had sought my assistance for post-operative breast cancer rehabilitation and pre-reconstruction. She was cheerful, witty and quick to solidify the exercises. She was always honest about her feelings and experiences and not afraid to share. She was a well-formed and well-read woman with cool interests (such as weaving). A patron of the arts, Janet on several occasions came out to support my music. She was hip and had a wonderfully warped sense of humour:) I loved her collection of silly t-shirts. She was ever adorable and I will miss her...

I was not sure where it was - but i knew I had one. After the Yarn Mill closed, Janet, Angelique and I used to take our very special friend, Doc, out for Sunday brunch every so often when he was able. It was a special day for all of us when Doc would have a "date with the girls and get away from the Mrs." and we could spend time and catch up. This picture of a picture does not do her justice - but I just had to share.

For Janet: June 24,2020 The grass weaves in the wind Your hair flows in time The sun gleams through the leaves Your eyes sparkle and shine The rain refreshes the air Your cupped hands are brimming The buds burst out in glory Your feet are singing. The new life is near. A trip or two afar New ideas to spar A work of art or two Release, travel anew Words, words and more In time it's better than before Fun times, nice times, friends Success and wonder that ends. A different life is here. So much work to do A way that is not you Everything on hold Until you are told You rise and fight with heart Voice and eyes devout No worries you know what is right A life without grief is in sight. The best life has no fear. Rest softly my dear friend. With much admiration, appreciation and LOVE, Cheers Betty
