A born and bred Bulldog — 107 years of loyalty, love, and legacy.

James Henry "Jim" Miller was a true Bulldog in every sense of the word — a man born and bred in Footscray, Victoria, who devoted his entire life to the club he loved and the community that shaped him. From his very first kick as a youngster on the grounds of Melbourne's western suburbs to his extraordinary final years as the oldest living VFL/AFL player, Jim carried the red, white, and blue with quiet pride and unwavering loyalty. Born on May 30, 1919, in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray, Jim first made his mark as a rover in the Footscray District Football League, winning the league's best and fairest medal in 1936. His talent and character earned him a recruitment call-up to the Footscray Football Club ahead of the 1938 season, and he made his VFL debut that year. Over the next decade he played 131 games for the Bulldogs, scoring 27 goals, and became a cornerstone of a golden era for the club — helping Footscray qualify for finals in 1938, 1942, 1944, and 1946, making them the most successful of the three clubs that had joined the VFL in 1925. When World War II intervened, Jim answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in both the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force. He returned to football after the war and, after leaving the VFL in 1948, served as captain-coach of Yarraville Football Club in the Victorian Football Association — until a leg injury brought his playing days to a close in 1949. Jim's connection to Footscray extended far beyond the playing field. Honoured with life membership in 1947, he remained deeply embedded in the club's governance, serving as a committee member from 1957, then as vice-president under Henry Dolphin, and ultimately as club president from 1963 to 1966. His legacy was formally celebrated in 1994 when authors Mark Buttler and Steven Milne named him among Footscray's finest 50 players in their book Sons of the 'Scray. Jim spent his later years at Marina Aged Care nursing home in Melbourne, where Western Bulldogs players visited him at his most recent birthday celebrations. He passed away on August 7, 2026, at the remarkable age of 107. He is survived by his daughter, Lyn, and by the countless lives he touched across nearly a century of service to the game he loved. As the family said simply: "Jim had an impact on countless lives and left a legacy that stretches far beyond what any of us truly know."

The clichéd headline 'Local boy makes good' could have been written specifically for Jim Miller, a born and bred Bulldog
