The shortest distance between the character and the laughter.

James Edward Burrows was born on December 30, 1940, in Los Angeles, California, to Abe Burrows — the celebrated Broadway composer, director, and co-author of "Guys and Dolls" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" — and Ruth Levinson. The theater ran in the family's blood. As a young boy after the family relocated to New York, James spent five years singing with the Metropolitan Opera Children's Chorus, and his formative years at the High School of Music & Art gave shape to a creative instinct that would define the next eight decades of his life. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and completed graduate study in directing at the Yale School of Drama, where his classmates included actor Robert Klein, playwright John Guare, and director John Badham. After Yale, he returned to California in 1965 and joined his father on the television series "O.K. Crackerby!" as a dialogue coach — the first step in a career that would rewrite the boundaries of the American sitcom. By 1974, at age 33, Burrows had found his calling behind the camera on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," and he never looked back. The next five decades were nothing short of historic. He co-created "Cheers" with brothers Glen and Les Charles in 1982, directing 243 of its 278 episodes and building what many consider the gold standard of ensemble comedy. He directed every episode of "Will & Grace," the pilot and 75 episodes of "Taxi," the pilot and 32 episodes of "Frasier," and 15 episodes of "Friends" — including the pilot that launched one of the most-watched casts in television history. In November 2015, he directed his 1,000th episode of television. Known to friends and colleagues simply as "Jimmy," Burrows brought warmth, patience, and an almost preternatural sense of comic timing to every set he walked onto. He remembered everyone's name. He gave the cast of "Friends" $200 each to gamble in Las Vegas before their show premiered, believing that bonds forged off-set made comedy breathe on-screen. His philosophy was simple and exacting: great comedy came not from goofiness but from truth, character, and the economy of a well-delivered line. James Burrows received 11 Primetime Emmy Awards, 5 Directors Guild of America Awards, the inaugural DGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Television Direction in 2015, and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006. He passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, at age 85, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Debbie, his daughters, his stepdaughter Paris, his sister Laurie Burrows Grad, and seven grandchildren. Television will not see his like again.

Jimmy Burrows brought out the best in every actor he ever worked with, and elevated every show he directed, making it funnier and more moving than anyone expected. He became another father figure for me, and I'm sure others. Paternal in the best sense of the word, loving, wise, encouraging, challenging, instructive, patient, inspiring, playful.

Being directed by Jimmy Burrows, while on Friends, was like hitting the jackpot. I'm delighted that everyone can now share in his incredible insight with this book.

We lost a giant today, a mentor to me, and a dear friend. The 800 lb gorilla of television comedy for 50 years, he was beloved by everyone, and has left not a mark but a footprint.
