I remember starting to interact more with Harold at First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City through the Anti-Racism Committee. He was compassionate,, humble and thoughtful. He organised very interesting summer forums. The topics brought to the forefront of these forums were quite interesting. Harold was one of the first people to show me he cared when when I came out. His kindness and love made an impact that will last a lifetime. He will be dearly missed. My sincerest condolences go to Carole and the en family she and Harold have.

The Anti White Supremacy Legend Rests Author, Minister, Chaplain Abilene Christian College; Harvard Divinity,; University of Tuebingen, Germany; Abilene Christian University My heart overflows with gratitude for the blessing Reverend Straughn has been to my family. He may be gone but his love and sacrifice for the marginalized lives. When others use the unfortunate circumstances Black migrants and others to their glory, he used his power as a white man to uplift these communities. When others join the struggle of the oppressed for pictures, Reverend Straughn marched with Martin Luther King and with many Salt Lake City migrants in continuance of the struggle against white supremacy. Several thousands of kilometers away from my country, I knew there was a mentor, minister, father, friend I could depend on for support because Harold had enrolled in community service long before I met him. The reason he wore the "Black Lives Matter" pin is because he was there when others treated us like we didn't count. And, the only reason he hasn’t responded lately is because he is resting! I have good memories of our time socializing in Abilene, TX, 1969-70 and our small children playing together: Elizabeth, Jeremy, Jason, Joanna. Then you left for Germany. Those were good times. My heartfelt condolences go to you and your family. Harold was an amazing man. Much love, Sherry

Wish Ida and I could for the Celebration of Life in person. It was such a joy to come to know Harold a bit on Facebook. He took the opportunity of the last year with protests for racial justice and the fight for the democracy to share some of his moving and impressive memories and experiences. So grateful to get a glimpse into his storied life dedicated to racial justice and deep community based spirituality. Please know that he is missed by many and we send condolences for Carol and the family and many thanks for his life. Lis Cox and Ida Oberman

1. When was a grad student in Abilene and started teaching freshman courses in Bible, Harold said something like try to teach the message and heart of the Word not just the facts/data. Wish I had been better able to do that at that point in life. 2. Kathy was from a small town and small church in Canada. The Herald of Truth TV program from Abilene was the signature presence of the Church of Christ on the bigger than local stage. Batsell Barrett Baxter was so admired. When we got to know Harold, who was writing program scripts, he gave us a tour of the film studio which so pleased Kathy. And gave her a book from the set backdrop.
