A beautiful soul who gave selflessly and loved deeply. She is forever in our hearts. Our cherished memories with Gail become our treasures. Sweet lady, you are free now, spread those wings and fly!

Gail Anne Satterfield, a retired nurse, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024, in Gilchrist Hospice in Towson, MD from complications due to lymphoma at the age of 73. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, wife, aunt, and cousin. She was born in Hagerstown, MD to her parents, Miriam and William Wintersteen who preceded her in death. She is survived by many family members who loved her dearly, some have requested not to be named online. To avoid any potential concerns the names of her family members will remain anonymous at this time.

Gail had an appreciation of nature and enjoyed gardening for many years. She found joy in tending to and arranging flowers, enjoying their beauty and fragrance. She loved spending time at her family’s farm, a historic converted stone grist mill over 200 years old, affectionately called the Mill. The Mill is where her grandparents then later her parents resided in their retirement, and where her father and his sister had been raised. The serenity of the Mill provided cherished family memories. Her family enjoyed their time together and often enjoyed a respite in the creek, playing games like Pictionary, cooking and enjoying meals together, and spending time in nature.

She had an eye for beauty and was skilled at creating beautiful corners, tablescapes, and magical holidays. She made Christmases and birthdays magical, coming up with fun themes and whimsical touches… and often staying awake into the wee hours of the morning to make such holiday magic happen. She loved browsing shops and delighted in finding special pieces. Bookshops and libraries were places where she could get lost for hours, eventually leaving with a stack of books in her arms and delight on her face. She often received compliments on her beautiful smile and youthful skin.

An incredible nurse, Gail was a gifted healer. Organized and dedicated, she often stayed late after her patients were tended to leaving the next shift and doctors’ thorough notation in her patients’ medical charts. Intuitive, she innately knew what people needed. A compassionate heart and soul, she went above and beyond to comfort and heal her patients, and many family members. Calm, slow to anger, she never rushed. Humble and quiet, she never boasted. Blessed were the souls who experienced her touch. She was selfless and generous with her love, time, and spirit. Whether while nursing, mothering, or serving as her mother’s helper, she gave continuously and loved deeply. Her love was like a warm blanket on a chilly day. It wrapped around you gently and was often taken for granted. Thinking of her kind, loving spirit makes those who knew her smile. Memories of her love are a treasure.

Her loss is deeply felt. It ripples through our family and our hearts. Gail was our matriarch. Her loving, gentle hand which guided us will be greatly missed. She was a strong woman who always put others before herself. She was an avid reader throughout her life. In her youth, she also enjoyed dancing, swimming, and playing. Gail loved the beach. She lit up sharing fond memories of her childhood playing with her siblings, and cherished their family beach vacations along the East Coast with her siblings and parents. Later in life, she found a little island gem called Sanibel Island off the west coast of Florida which she absolutely fell in love with and quickly mastered the “Sanibel Stoop” shell collecting.

Arrangements are in progress to hold an ash-releasing ceremony in the waters off of Sanibel. A gathering may also be held in PA for anyone unable to travel to Sanibel, those arrangements will be provided as information becomes available. Instead of flowers or other items, if you'd like to do something in her memory feel free to make a contribution, in her name, to Lymphoma research. It is not requested, just a suggestion if should you feel like you'd like to do so in her memory.

Mom, today it's been a year since you transitioned from the Earthly plane. It's still feels surreal to know I can't pick up the phone and hear your cheerful voice. You are missed dearly! The only comfort is knowing you have reunited with other sweet souls who have also passed. In your memory, Alanna, Lily, & I went to watch the sunrise at the Sanibel lighthouse and then had breakfast at your favorite breakfast spot, The Over Easy Cafe. We got an extra special celestial treat as the full moon gleamed off the water as we crossed the Sanibel bridge onto the island. We chatted about how you were so good at making us feel loved and how you noticed the beauty that surrounds us. Thinking of you doing the Sanibel stoop, smiling at the streets named after flowers, and how we enjoyed many breakfasts at the cafe warmed my heart. You are missed but never forgotten! It was extra special to share our special place with Alanna. And just in time, as they are moving the location of the cafe down the street. Thank you for the love and beauty you added to our lives. You are appreciated. Until we see you again, please know you are loved beyond measure 💕

Dear Mom, I LOVE YOU!!! You are so greatly missed here in the physical world, beyond words. Yet, I feel you with me often. It comforts me to know you are no longer suffering or in pain, and I cherish all the time we had together. Though unable to travel to you, I was and always will be with you. The time we had chatting, laughing, crying, sharing, and at times even karaoking over the phone are just some of what I cherish and will hold dear. You were a wonderful, kind, loving mother. You are in my heart forever! I can only imagine what a celebration it was when you returned "home". Please give my love and hugs to all the loved ones up there. I hope Mim, Bill, Ronnie, Hazel, etc. were all there waiting to welcome you home with open arms. Many may not understand, I believe you were the strongest woman I've ever known. You kept putting one foot in front of the other despite the disappointments and setbacks that life always seemed to put in your path. Even with all of the hurdles, you still loved with all your heart and gave even when you did not receive. I am grateful to have your DNA running through my body, it can never be taken and I cherish it! You sweet lady spread those wings and FLY! You are free now. I pray that you experience the unconditional love you shared with us. Thank you for everything, especially for being YOU <3 Love, Tiffany

What is your favorite memory shared with Gail?

One of my favorite memories of my Grammie (Gail) are making drawings she always put on her fridge, baking cookings and of course the holidays! She was the best host during family gathers ❤️. Physically she’s no longer here but we will always have her with us in our hearts.

A Poem for my Mamaroo You are in the trees, among the flowers The cardinals and the hummingbirds The beaches, with their tides and shells The books that touch our souls with words Your smile, your laugh are captured in morning light The sunsets and the stars at night You are in the snow, which falls so peacefully The fish, as they jump through brooks and streams The cool autumn days, full of golden leaves You will always mean the world to me In our hearts your spirit lives on So you will never truly be gone Love, Your Angel Pumpkin
