Recuerdos

My case was more or less that of a rolling stone, but stopping at the right places. I believe that was part of my destiny.

Francis Ogide Duru — known to millions simply as "Ahanna" — was one of Nollywood's most beloved actors, a man whose journey from accidental stage debut to industry legend defied every conventional path. Born on July 27, 1969, in Bamenda, Cameroon, to Nigerian parents from Imo State who had fled the country during the civil war, Francis carried the weight and richness of two cultures from his very first breath. His entry into the performing arts was, by his own admission, entirely unplanned. In 1989, he stepped in to replace an absent cast member in a Sette Productions theatre production — a favour to a friend that, in his words, "became a defining moment." That accidental appearance ignited a passion he would pursue for the next 37 years. He later earned a B.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996 and a Master's degree in Development Communication from Nasarawa State University, Keffi — a discipline that reflected his conviction that creative arts must do more than entertain. His film debut came with "Missing Mark" in 1989, but it was his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe's landmark 1995 film "Rattlesnake" that transformed him into a household name across Nigeria and the African diaspora. The role was so indelible that the name "Ahanna" became synonymous with Francis Duru himself. Over more than 150 film and television productions, he moved effortlessly between dramatic weight and comedic lightness — a versatility that few in the industry could match. Beyond the screen, Francis was a humanitarian. He partnered with UNICEF, USAID, LEAP Africa, and COMPASS on development projects, served as Interim President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010, and received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007. He believed, deeply and vocally, that storytelling was a tool for education, cultural preservation, and social change. He was also a devoted husband and father. On May 31, 2003, he married Adokiye Amasiatta Duru, his university sweetheart, and together they built a family of four children. The loss of their 15-year-old son Ifeanyi in August 2024 was a grief almost beyond words — yet Francis found the strength to return to church and lead services the very next day, a testament to the spiritual fortitude that sustained him throughout his life. Francis Duru passed away on October 23, 2026, at the age of 57, following a brief illness. He leaves behind a wife, three surviving children, a profession that mourned him as irreplaceable, and a legacy that will live on in every frame of every film that bears his name.

As a senior colleague, I watched and appreciated your talent with great admiration, and I always believed that you had so much more to offer this industry. Sleep well, young Ahanna. And may your memory be a blessing.
