This comes as a shock. I used to hang out with Doug at the Canuck and other sports bars. He was a funny guy. Saddened to hear of his sudden death.

Doug was one of my very first friends at Northwestern. He was such a joy and I'm so grateful to have spent time on this earth with him. He will be so missed.

Every memory I have of Doug he is smiling and joyful.. which is honestly a pretty awesome way to be remembered now that I think about it. To me, he started as Jackie's brother.. and then became my math tutor! I have some really fond memories of being a super awkward preteen, sitting next to my friend's "cool brother" trying to learn how to do math. However, it wasn't long until I found out that Doug was a goofy guy (/great tutor!) who loved singing songs he made up about math. The dream tutor! We kept in touch over the years, and when I was away at college, I had to write a paper about someone who lived abroad.. and Doug was literally the only person I knew who was brave enough to move to a different country. I sent him an email and he soon became the focus of my paper about intercultural communications (looking back at our email thread, I cannot believe he answered my questions with a straight face.). He came to our Skype (it was that long ago!) interview wearing a towel on his head from his shower and kept it on the entire time. He was so gracious and gave me hours of his time, answering all of my questions (and really dug into the questions about dating differences abroad!). I took screenshots of the video interview as proof for my professor that I spoke to someone real. So somewhere out there.. on an old 2006 Dell laptop.. is a series of Skype screenshots of us smiling together, and an epic 12 page paper about Doug Sunshine's adventures in Hong Kong. I'm so grateful for the ~30 years that I got to know Doug. Sunshine family, I'm praying for you guys each day and send you all of my love. What a special guy whose smile (and math songs) I'll never forget.

The first time I met Doug, I thought, this makes perfect sense. Jackie has always been a source of light, and it was immediately clear that same light ran through her family. Doug possessed a rare kind of warmth that cannot be taught or manufactured. He greeted the world with a generous smile, an infectious laugh, and a spirit that made people feel seen and welcome. Some people leave an impression through grand gestures; Doug did it simply by being himself. His presence brought joy, his laughter brought comfort, and his kindness left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. He was an extraordinary man, and his memory will continue to shine brightly through the many lives he touched.

Every memory I have with Doug has been so positive and fun. I always looked forward to seeing him when he joined Jackie and her friends. He was always so kind and welcoming and had a big smile of his face. A favorite memory of mine was at Jackie's 30th birthday Napa trip. Doug, Alix, and I stayed up until around 4 am drinking wine by the fire, listening to music and laughing while talking about life. Doug was so deep and introspective and gave such profound advice. The 3 of took a bunch of selfies where we thought we looked cute and when we looked in the morning we cracked up and immediately deleted them because our teeth were almost black from all the wine we had. I wish I still had those. He will be missed so very much.

Dear Sunshine family, I am deeply saddened to hear today that Doug recently passed away. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time. Doug was a warm, loving soul with a beautiful smile that brightened every space he entered. May the angels above embrace Doug as he is welcomed home with our gracious, merciful Lord. No words adequately express the pain of losing a beloved family member, but I pray that the love extended to you now may help you find your way forward. God bless you. Love, Lisa DiGennaro King
