Doug Cribbs, 60, of Sterling VA passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2020, with his family by his side, after losing a tough battle with pancreatic cancer. Doug was the son of the late Reuben L. Cribbs and Anna Marie (Johnson) Cribbs, formerly of Saxonburg, PA. He was born on February 11, 1960 and grew up in Saxonburg where he graduated from Knoch High School. He graduated from Stockton State College in New Jersey where he studied Marine Biology, and later obtained his master's degree in Management of Technology at University of Miami in Florida. His career took him to Florida and then to California, where he spent 23 years working as a GIS Project Manager at Esri, in Redlands, CA. He recently relocated with his family to VA to work in Esri's DC area office. An Eagle Scout in his youth, his love of nature and wildlife and his favorite pastime, fishing, guided him to his career in GIS, where he was involved in many environmental mapping projects from vegetation classifications for the National Park Service, to wetlands for the US Department of Fish and Wildlife. He was passionate about protecting the environment, especially oceans and fisheries, and when he wasn't working, he loved to spend his time on the water, fishing deep seas, saltwater flats, mountain streams, and anywhere in between. Aside from fishing and nature, Doug had many interests, including traveling/geography, hunting/wildcraft, and was quite skilled at various crafts and hobbies such as tying flies, building model planes, automobile restoration (especially VWs), and all types of woodworking and carpentry. He loved spending time with his wife and daughter, camping and exploring nature. His daughter Delaney is majoring in Environmental Science, so somewhat following in his footsteps. Always open-minded, friendly, and welcoming to all, Doug will be missed by friends across the globe and in all walks of life. Doug is survived by his wife of 22 years, Valerie (Sanders) Cribbs and daughter, Delaney Cribbs (20), both of Sterling, VA, a sister, Diane Cribbs, brother-in-law, Arthur Mann of Haverford, PA. and a large circle of friends and colleagues.

Doug was instrumental in the development of our Southwestern Region GIS program. He worked with TVA, Jan Kelly and I to help us put together 15 core data themes which were the foundation of our GIS. With their help we automated over 15,000 quads across 4 states. Doug provided guidance, advice and a deep felt interest in our success. He visited our forests and talked to so many of our GIS folks. I don't know how we could have done it without his expertise. He and Eric Chiasson were just wonderful to work with. I will miss him as I am sure you all will too. It was his legacy to help people succeed. He was an exceptional person.

Doug was the project manager for the USFS FSTopo product. I had the pleasure of working with him for the last 12 years of his career. I have been missing his kind and gentle voice on our weekly calls... On behalf of the Forest Service team, we share our condolences with you Val and your loved ones. Below is a topo map that I created in memory of Doug.

Doug is a generous soul and my favorite memory from nine years of working with him is the dialog we shared with Captain Moore of Algalita regarding the urgency of action to reduce plastic caps in our environment. Doug was totally focused on how he could help- that was always the first thing he said, and it helped settle the conversation to a steady hum of activity, consequence, and next steps. I will miss him as both a colleague and friend.

Doug was the most naturally good person I ever met. I think everyone who met him could feel that. I don't know of a higher compliment I could say about him or anyone.

This is just a little of what I shared with Valerie...it expresses how I truly feel... Doug had a huge influence on my career and I always thanked him for believing in me and giving me all those opportunities that sometimes I thought he was pretty nuts to think I could do it! He covered my butt a few times too and I learned so much from him! I'm happy that we kept in touch even after I moved to Portland and I'll always remember how chill he could be yet quickly produce a detailed and well-written scope of work and be ready to rock and roll! I learned how to be relaxed and nurture trust with clients from watching Doug in action. It was real and down to earth. There was no way a client could leave a meeting and not just love working with the guy - even if there were still kinks to be ironed out! He was more than just a mentor and I will always appreciate that. My fondest memories include the party he hosted at their home in CA - warmest welcomes to everyone as usual...big hugs, lots of laughter, beer pong, keg stands (true story! LOL), and so much fun. Time to work hard and time to party hard! No walking on eggshells...it was just so easy to be yourself around Doug. I will always remember how passionate he was about nature and the environment and his love for fresh seafood! I'm still searching for pics of our NRM (Natural Resource Management) team's overnight beach trip in Malibu with young Delaney. He created a team that was more than just a team - we were a family in and out of the office. Man, Doug will truly be missed...

I had the very good fortune of knowing Doug during the 25 years he spent at esri. Although I was technically his manager for many of those years, I always felt that Doug and I had a brotherly type of relationship. There were so many times that I would just stop by his office to run ideas by him or to get his counsel on something. He would always make time for me and always had great insight into a project or business situation or a personnel concern. He talked me off the ledge many times and I will never forget that 😊. The work that Doug did at esri was truly impactful, especially his leadership in managing the National Park Service project. Doug was a critically important part of our leadership team in DBS and contributed so much to our growth and success. I am truly grateful for everything that he did for the organization and for me personally. I will truly miss him as a colleague, but more importantly, as a friend.
