Kelley Baumhauer

Donald Long

Donald “Don” Long, 88, of Lexington, Ohio passed away Saturday, July 6th, following a brave battle with multiple illnesses. The son of Donel and Bertha (Gleisinger) Long,  Don was born March 26, 1936.  He graduated from Lexington High School in 1955.  He was a passionate supporter of his alma mater all throughout his life, especially their basketball team. Following graduation, he met his wife of 66 years, Barb Walker, cruising the Mansfield Square in his 1956 Chevy. They soon married and had three beautiful daughters. In the start of his career, Don worked as a Supervisor at the Empire Steel Mill. After, Don was a proud Owner-Operator of his own Semi rig and drove for Pringles Trucking of Mansfield among many others.  Don spent his later years working for S+S Coach in Lexington, until he retired. Among all of his professions, Don's family and community always came first.  He would drop anything at moment's notice to help family, friends, neighbors:  building, fixing things, mowing yards, delivering food. He built the beautiful house on Vanderbilt road with his own hands and his daughter and son-in-laws' house as well.  He was a block layer, plumber, electrician and mechanic all in one. Always a race car enthusiast, Don raced as a Stock Car driver in the 60's at Mansfield Raceway. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and attending classic cars shows following his own racing era.  He always loved Ohio sports including following the Buckeyes, Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers.  He participated in league bowling with friends for years at Lex Lanes.  Don raised beagles and hunted. He fished in a boat he named after his first granddaughter, Kelley Lynn.  He affectionately shared both golfing and watching golf with his grandson, Tyler.  His kids and Grandkids were everything to him. In retirement, Don loved gardening, sports and Euchre.  He would make hearty meals at home for anyone that came through his door, and no one ever went hungry when he was around.  One of his favorite daily activities was spending time in his garden.  He adored to share that time with his grandkids, giving them all his “almost world-famous” tractor rides, a rite of passage.  He would proudly play cards with friends several times a week wearing hilarious shirts his daughter, Cheryl, bought him saying things like “I bought this shirt with your money”. He was a prankster and would often stand hands on his hips or make jokes telling someone “you aren't going to do that are you?” and cracking himself up.  BUT most of all, he loved everyone so BIG, huge, and he showed us all how much daily, in an easy way. One Oreo or silly look at a time. He would never accept a gift easily, but always gave. Don is survived by his loving wife, Barb Long (Walker); Sister, Peggy Long; 2 Daughters, Cheryl Williams (Long) and Debra Long; 5 Grandchildren, Kelley Watkins (Baumhauer), Amanda Baumhauer, Lindsay Williams, Jodie Summers (Williams), and Tyler Good; 6 Great-Grandchildren, Michael, Mila, Natalee, Kinzy, Enslee, and Maverick. Don was preceded in death by his Parents; Brother, Richard; Sisters, Elsie, Donna, Maxine; and Daughter, Gloria. Special thanks to John and Kathy Cassity for the care they have given in Don’s final months to love on both him and his house and garden. There will be no funeral service at Don’s request. He never wanted to make a fuss. And asked that everyone remembers instead by the times they shared together. For remembrance of Don, please visit https://www.mykeeper.com/DonaldJLong to add stories, pictures and read all those that have been posted.  He will be forever in our hearts.
