I have just stumbled on this tribute page and feel compelled to add to it. Mr Wood was an inspirational, warm, and generous teacher who clearly holds a cherished place in so many people's hearts and lives. I was privileged to have been taught by Mr Wood at Allerton Grange High School in the late 1970's and he was a bright light in a gloomy time; one of the major sparks that ultimately inspired me to pursue a career as an actor and which set the wheels in motion for everything that has followed. Some 25 or so years ago I received a lovely letter from Mr Wood, which I still have, and know he was so very proud of how he touched so many people and how he had inspired them to reach for their dreams. One very, very, special person who I was lucky to have been taught by.

On our mantlepiece, among photographs of the family, sits a postcard. The message is in David's beautiful hand. We can't bring ourselves, even after all this time, to take it down.

It was lovely to see you both last August and share your special day. David touched so many lives and has made such a positive difference in the arts community. Please accept my sincere condolences, love and prayers. He will be sadly missed and his memory will live on in the the hearts of all those he loved, supported, encouraged and helped in so many ways.

It's my great pleasure to be able to have called this wonderful man my friend. I first met David at Dewsbury Arts Group in 1970 when it was based in a warehouse near the market in the town. As I wasn't that interested in appearing on stage I helped David with set building and Arthur Wade on lights. Thanks to this great man I learned enough to eventually work in professional theatre (Leeds Playhouse 74/5 season and deputy chief electrician Leeds Grand 82-85) for which I will be eternally grateful. I last saw David (and Judith) when I was chief electrician on the Wakefield Mystery Plays in 1989 at Pontefract Castle God bless you sir, I could never repay your kindness and encouragement.

I will remember David as a generous, funny, kind and talented creative force of nature. Like so many people, I have many happy memories of time in his company, which I will always treasure. It is a testament to both David and Judith's energy, talent and determination that such a wonderful legacy remains in Dewsbury for us all to enjoy.

David and I met at a party in 1964. That is where he invited this complete novice to join the fledgling Arts Group in Dewsbury. ‘Rape of the Belt’ was my first play, and David and Judy were both in the cast and they took me under their wings. They were both really supportive and encouraging and you could see David in particular having a real flair for bringing out the best in actors. He was so generous with his may skills and talents, and together with Judith created something unique and which attracted like minded people. In our two hander ‘Duck Variations’ by David Mamet, we sat on our park benches and the dialogue began with us discussing the mating habits of ducks and ran on to examine law , friendship and death! The adjudicator put down his pencil and said he had just witnessed a master class in drama. I have so many things to thank David and Judith for… creative direction, passion, enthusiasm and their unwavering commitment to the arts. But most of all for 56 years of friendship. I’ll miss you David, but you have created a wonderful legacy, and your beautiful spirit that lit up a tiny part of Yorkshire will continue to burn brightly. Rest In Peace old pal, you deserve it. My deepest and most sincere condolences to Judith Richard, Andrew and family. Terry Ryan
